Strict Parenting?

That's very hard to watch. I have a son the same age as the little boy on the video and i was in tears watching it by the end. That woman needs help.

As I was...if someone did this to my grandchildren, there would be a cost. A large cost!

Because society has changed from the fifties era. I think good parents are sometime reluctant to disciplines their children. Also Some older children obviously know this and play on that. I have known two thirteen year olds calling social services on their parents for grounding them. They actually had to go to court the judges sided with the parents but also mandated the parents to go through counseling and a few other things. The parents were so mad at the system and their children for "turning them in" that they removed every thing from these teenagers room (clothes toys etc) if they wanted to wear a outfit they had to ask n nicely etc. This was their idea of identifying who provides for and who is the parent and who is in charge. Last I heard the two young boys straitened up or grew up or matured after that.

I think in todays society children have some weight on their side and will turn in their own parents very quickly and now days it some innocent parents will suffer too.

Having said that I believe in corporal punishment but only directly after the offense. With only an open hand and on the butt and not much, no where else and for goodness sakes keep the cloths on.

Now after saying all that my wife and I have used this and we have never felt we have abused our kids in anyway. we haven't "spanked" any of them for years (actually cant remember the last time we did). And all our kids are perfect (of course)

Edited to add I didn't watch the video I just read the posts.

My experience with 3 very active boys was that one little swat on their butt when they were little helped focus their attention. The best punishment after they were about 4 years old was no more than 5 minutes with their nose in the corner. Followed with a discussion of what they did, and how to do better it in the future.

I thought of something funny. The boy was in trouble for two things, lying and fighting. The hot sauce was for lying. Being that the family is LDS, I thought what could help a child learn not to lie. Then I remember "Wo unto the liar, for he shall be thrust down to hell"

So, instead of a time out corner or spot, call it Hell. Then when the child lies, and you ask "What happens when we lie" the response is "We go to hell". So you send the child to hell untill he shall pay the utmost farthing.

Once my oldest was capable of writing fairly well (around the 2nd grade), I started making him write sentences for some offenses, like yelling at his little brother.

We would start out with 25 sentences like "I will not yell at my brother" and then if it continued to be a problem that day i'd just add 25 more.

Generally works really well since he HATES to do it.

That sounds rather drastic. It was hot sauce and a cold shower. She was assertive with the kid, but she didn't tell him he was the worst child in the world and going to hello or that he wouldn't amount to anything. She didn't hit him or berate him. She didn't even scream at him.

I don't think her discipline tactics will work. I think she needs help because it appears that with this one child at least (and from the sounds of what little I did hear of her interview this is the only child she really has problems with) she needs someone to teach her styles that will work because we all know that each child requires a different approach (and this one definitely isn't working for her if it is to the stage it is), but excommunication?

I would guess that she will be required to take parenting classes, but assuming this is the worst that happened in her home, I certainly hope she doesn't lose her kids.

I think Pa Pa was joking, emeliza :P

From someone who believes in loving corporal punishment, whose days of child rearing are past, that was horrible. I will never forget that tape. My children always knew that I was more sorry than they were if I had to administer a spanking. This lady just seems to hate her child. Maybe she was embarrassed at his behavior? I know it sounds like a pat on my own back...I wasn't the model father, but I was never angry, and my heart was always broken when I spanked, and only after clear violations of clear "capital" crimes. There were two of them. Lying to Mommy or Daddy...and direct disobedience. If it could be established that the child forgot...the punishment was not spanking (capital punishment). We would have a long talk to see if together we could figure out a way to avoid the punishment...to mitigate the crime. Sometimes we did! That was always so sweet and welcome....And my grown children, if I am not mistaken, believe in doing it like Daddy did when their turn comes. Oh...what a horrible mother she seems. Surely she doesn't hate her child as much as it appears.

One time my youngest daughter gave me a big kiss on the cheek...just before she was about to receive a spanking...I couldn't do it. I hope I did right. What dear, sweet memories.
