We should not fall into the trap created by memory and expectation...

The whole concept of historicity is meaningless,

Many of the questions surrounding BoM historicity have been. But there are some things such there was a Lehi who left Jerusalem with his family and crossed the sea or the BoM is false in regards to the word of God and the restoration claims of the Church.

My testimony is based on the ideas found in the book, not the events surrounding it.

The testimony of many Protestants nowadays revolves around some Biblical concepts but they don't believe in the divinity of Christ, or his literal resurrection, etc. Such logic implies that the Bible is not truthful about those events and if it isn't truthful, then what about the other concepts taught therein? The same applies to the BoM. If it's not what it claims to be, then the extent of it's truths are unknown.

Any other logic makes God out to be a liar (or nonexistent) because we can interpret the Bible any which way we want.

Hate to break it to you, but we already do interpret the Bible, Book of Mormon and other scriptures any which way we want (assuming that "we" refers to the leaders of the Church and those who follow them).

For some reason, the word, "shallow" comes to mind.

In what way would a parent's desire to attend their child's wedding be "shallow"? I'm not sure I understand your use of the word.

Elder Holland says people who don't believe in BoM historicity definitely have a place in the Church.

Mayhap that explains why in his earlier days he entertained my proposal for an in-depth study

of the Spalding-Rigdon authorship explanation for the Book of Mormon:

He appears to be a man of godly wisdom and discernment -- and although my proposal was never

funded, the encouragement I received at that time was what led to my graduate studies, my postings

here, and the upcoming book on Sidney Rigdon.

Thank you, Elder Holland -- you are truly a light unto the Gentiles and to the latter day children of Israel.

Actually we don't. It's done according to certain rules (the prophets) which you happen to have mentioned.

Yeah, those shallow people that care about the most important event of their family member's lives.

Because, for them, it is more important to be acceptable in the eyes of the child than in the eyes of God. They can fool the child, but they can't fool God. As much as a child would want a parent to attend his or her wedding, I don't think many faithful Latter-day Saints would want a parent to lie in order to attend what they consider a sacred event. It is shallow in the extreme.

Yeah, those shallow people that care about the most important event of their family member's lives.

The only thing they care about is themselves. It is not only shallow, but selfish.

The divinity of Christ and His literal resurrection are ideas found in the book, of which I have a testimony.

Avoision. If the BoM is lying about it's own historicity or JS made it all up, etc., the source of your testimony cannot come from the BoM, or the LDS Church, and possibly the Bible. Ultimately your testimony is false by your own logic.

What is "glib and useless" about my response?

While I believe that the Scriptures tend to describe actual events. I not sure that any one mans' interpretation of those events is literally the only one that is correct(particularly where God has been silent). :P

Of course, many groups working against the Church teach that the BOM is not historical. Does this mean that those who do not believe in the historicity of the BOM should not get their recommends because they sympathize with the groups to the extent they teach that the BOM is not historical-which is a teaching contrary to the teachings of the Church ?

Unless they've changed the recommend questions recently, I don't think that, "Do you believe in the historical accuracy of the Book of Mormon?" is a question. The question you cited does not mean what you think it means.

The BoM is the word of God. The BoM says Nephites and Lamanites existed. It says God told Lehi to leave Jerusalem with his family. To not believe the historicity of those (and others) is to not be able to truthfully answer 'yes' to the TR questions (or 'no' in the case of 7).

I agree in the big picture. But I don't necessarily agree with some peoples interpretation of the route they took, or their speculation as to the exact location of Zarahemla.

If Star Wars fans were adamant about members truly believing before they entered the club house, there would still be many entering. However, would it really be right to leave those who still think they were great movies standing at the curb?

The location of Zarahemla has nothing to do with BoM historicity because not enough details are given. That Zarahemla (or it's lingual equivalent) existed does.

The source of my testimony is the witness of the Holy Ghost confirming the truth of the ideas contained in the Book of Mormon, as yours should also be. I simply do not care one way or the other about historicity, as it has nothing to do with me. If pressed into a corner I will accept it as a matter of faith, but it is still unimportant.

And "avoision" isn't a word.

Depending on what is meant by 'source', I disagree in general that the Holy Ghost is the source of anyone's tesitmony on anything. One typically has to be presented with something the Holy Ghost can testify to and that something is the source. But I understand what you mean. It doesn't change (or even address) what I said one whit.

And "avoision" isn't a word.

It's a perfectly cromulent word.

Or when thy micturations are as plurdled gabbleblotchits on a lurgid bee.

But seriously, it's a neologism (and a perfectly cromulent one at that).

If you don't believe me, I will have to rend thee in the gobberwarts with my blurglecruncheon,

See if I don't!
