A Unique and Wonderful Sacrament Meeting

Today except for the hymns and sacrament prayers our sacrament meeting was entirely in American Sign Language. We have around a dozen hearing impaired Saints. A bishopric member who hears through cochlear implants conducted, a professional signer from Eastern Kentucky University acted as voice, the prayers were given by ASL members, and the speakers were our two ASL missionary sisters and a Nigerian sister (former Muslim) who cannot hear. It was a memorable experience.

A few years ago I was with a group of our youth doing baptisms for the dead in the temple, and as we waited we watched an ASL ward doing baptisms for the dead using ASL for the words of the ordinance.  That was really something to see.  There was total silence in the room except for the occasional sound of the patron being immersed in the water, so we all experienced a very a unique reverential feeling about the ordinance.

It does make things feel more intimate.
