So that means He can lie?

He can break Covenants?

No!

Like the scriptures say, He would cease to be God, if He broke his word.  He would no longer be trustworthy!

Who wants a God you can't trust???

Not saying that God would do that, just don't like the sort of "deal".

You don’t think it a good idea for God to keep his promises?  He is bound by his own words, he is trustworthy.

If he doesn’t want to be bound, he just won’t make any promises/covenants.

It's like we are putting words in God's mouth by saying he is bound. That's just LDS scripture correct?

I guess I have to ask a question! Surprise! I don't really remember if my LDS friends believe God is omniscient or not? Or if so, what that means to you? It seems to me if God can't do as He wills, He isn't God - especially if He is omniscient. I am sure that what may be confusing to humans, isn't to Him.

This was my feeling as well. Like we are somehow on equal footing, just felt wrong.

You need to read the context though and not just that phrase or others like it. He is bound if we do as he says…if we follow his word, which word is his choice, not ours.  He makes us a promise and we accept it and live by it. Only then is he bound.  He is bound to his own promises, his own words, not to our whims.

Would you prefer it if he could tell someone to take a hike after that person did what God told him to do?

I can see it if it was men making the “deal”, but it isn’t. God has laid out the laws and the blessings attached to them and he is no respector of persons in how he fulfills his promises in that he fulfills them for all people.  Everyone can trust in God without fear their trust will backfire on them, God will not mistreat them, but be fair and just as well as merciful.

God is bound in this way…

He asks us to do things.

We say yes we will or do something that shows our agreement (accept a calling from him such as being s parent).

We are both (man and God) committed to the covenant/blessing God gifted us with.

When we have done what he requires, he does what he requires of himself to do.  In no way could any man force him to do what he doesn’t want to do.

God also bound himself with an oath, so that those who received the promise could be perfectly sure that he would never change his mind.

18 So God has given both his promise and his oath. These two things are unchangeable because it is impossible for God to lie. Therefore, we who have fled to him for refuge can have great confidence as we hold to the hope that lies before us.

Quote

Because God wanted to make the unchanging nature of his purpose very clear to the heirs of what was promised, he confirmed it with an oath.

18 God did this so that, by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled to take hold of the hope set before us may be greatly encouraged.

D&C 82:10. “I, the Lord, Am Bound When Ye Do What I Say”

This verse shows a part of God’s basic nature: the way He deals with His children and the reason they can trust Him. Elder James E. Talmage said: “‘Mormonism’ has taught me that God holds himself accountable to law even as he expects us to do. He has set us the example in obedience to law. I know that to say this would have been heresy a few decades ago. But we have the divine word for it: ‘I, the Lord, am bound when ye do what I say; but when ye do not what I say, ye have no promise.’ (Doc. and Cov. 82:10.) He operates by law and not by arbitrariness or caprice.” (In Conference Report, Apr. 1930, p. 96.)

sec 82:8-10

”And again, I say unto you, I give unto you a new commandment, that you may understand my will concerning you;

9 Or, in other words, I give unto you directions how you may act before me, that it may turn to you for your salvation.

10 I, the Lord, am bound when ye do what I say; but when ye do not what I say, ye have no promise.”

This is God’s will, to be bound to his Law.

He is only bound when we align our will to his will, his law.  There are no surprises, no plot twists, no turning of the tables on him.

I don’t enjoy this “gotcha” style argument.  I said what I said.  I won’t participate further than saying yes, I do know women can be modest when they show their shoulders (just like boys).  I do know they can be modest when they show their stomach just like boys can. I know they can be modest when they show their knees just like boys can.
I think arrogant argument can be much more offensive and demonstrates lack of humility. You asked me to clarify what I think and I have done so, and I will not argue further.

I think you may be in the wrong thread.

Since God is willing himself to be bound by his promises, since we can trust he will not only be able to fulfill them, but will certainly do as he promises, it seems to me it is greater evidence that he is omniscient, not less.

Most Saints I know believe God is omniscient, though a few limit omniscience to knowing everything that can be known.
