Dario_M Posted December 10, 2022 Posted December 10, 2022 Hello god bless everyone. ✝️ I whas asking myself (and i allready asked this question to my missionaries) why don't we use Psalm music in the church? Psalms are made by god. The scriptures and also the music. It is all made by god. And everything that god made is good right? So why is that actually? Why dont we sing Psalms in the church? Here i have a Psalm. Psalm 2 Versus 1: Fear the Lords power and obidient his kingdom etc...
Pyreaux Posted December 10, 2022 Posted December 10, 2022 We don't have music for it to practice with. We ideally need to own the rights to publish other people's music based on the Psalms. We are often usually stuck on songs that rhyme, and the psalms never rhymed, so there are songs that use at least a verse or so as the chorus. To do it proper and true old school, we'd need Hebrew words and it would be accompanied by a ruckus of instruments without harmony, which might not sound good to a western ear. Though it would be cool. Let's force the Tabernacle Choir to do it, just to show us.

And if the scriptures would be translated in english it must sound really really nice. In the Church where i am going we also have this type of church music we are singing on. Mostely this kind of music sounds a lot happier then the old Psalms. But i am not really familiar with this kind of music. And that is because i am not that long in that LDS church offcourse. How do you guys call this type of music that you guys (and me also in my own church) sing every sunday in the LDS church actually? In the church where i go the music is in a green book. Everytime i am in church i forget to ask people (or the missionaries) what the name of all those churchs songs are.
Dario_M Posted December 10, 2022 Author Posted December 10, 2022 Oh edit. The psalm i showed here whas not versus 1. But versus 6* Not that it really matters anyway offcourse. Because it is in Dutch. You guys wont understand it anyway.

Setting a reverent tone for the meeting. Whether that should change might be dictated by the culture. I like the idea that at least the Sacrament remaining a Meditative time to reflect on the Atonement and hear the Holy Ghost, but we don't discuss meditation to explain what the big idea is that the meetings can be so unstimulating. Could be why we hemorrhage discontent youth who don't know how to appreciate moments of peace nor how to meditate. 1

Normaly i know a lot of church melodies. But these ones...this Hymns are new for me. Thanks for the information. 🙏
Dario_M Posted December 10, 2022 Author Posted December 10, 2022 I just have found this hymn. I dont think i have heard this one in my church yet. But it sounds sooo beautiful. 1
Rain Posted December 10, 2022 Posted December 10, 2022 One of my favorite: The Lord Is My Shepherd “no fewer than 50 of the 150 psalms are quoted or referenced in 76 hymns in the [Latter-day Saint] hymnbook.” Some of those hymns include:
Calm Posted December 10, 2022 Posted December 10, 2022 (edited) I am going off of memory since it has been awhile since I last looked, but at the back of the green hymn book isn’t there a list of scriptures that apply to certain songs? Though it may not be they are quoted, but they share the teachings. The Church’s website has the music online (there is also an app) so as to help with learning the music and words. I don’t know if it is available in Dutch or Portuguese, but the music would be the same. https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/music/library?lang=eng They are working on a new more global hymn book, as this one is dominated by the Protestant European/American background. I am quite looking forward to the new one. It will probably come out just as you are finally getting used to the green book. Edited December 10, 2022 by Calm 1

I wanna get more familiar with those melodies anyway offcourse. And thank you for the links as well. 🥰
Dario_M Posted December 10, 2022 Author Posted December 10, 2022 Edit. I whas watching the link and i saw that green book. That is the one. That is the book we are using in our church right now.
Calm Posted December 11, 2022 Posted December 11, 2022 It is used everywhere. The Church does everything as far as manuals and books pretty much the same. Your lesson you had this week is the same one others are having across the globe.
Calm Posted December 11, 2022 Posted December 11, 2022 The difference is mine is in English and yours Portuguese or Dutch.

And that hymn book is indeed in Portugees unfortunatly. Wich i find a shame because i rather wanted to sing the hymns in English.
