rodheadlee Posted January 25, 2022 Posted January 25, 2022 https://www.npr.org/podcasts/381444484/radio-west Did anyone listen to the podcast about going on a mission? I caught 10 minutes of it at lunch. Comments?
Popular Post Paloma Posted January 27, 2022 Popular Post Posted January 27, 2022 I listened to the podcast and liked it. In my view, it highlighted that the 'Mission' documentary project was handled in a sensitive and compassionate way. It sounds as if the filmmaker genuinely liked the young missionaries chosen for this project (in fact, I got the impression she liked all the young missionaries she met. Kudos to her for starting with such an open mind and positive attitude!) I appreciated that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints gave her a green light without stipulations attached, to create the film she wanted. This is a movie I would like to watch. I think the reason I really liked it is that it resonated with me, a non-LDS Christian. I too had the privilege of getting behind the suits and long skirts and Elder/Sister badges to the unique young person with a name behind the wall of 'official missionary calling' to the warm/hopeful/kind/confused/ confident/ scared/needy/steadily growing/mutually appreciative beautiful young person in a strange and lonely land. As you know, life can still be strange and lonely even when surrounded by companions and constant activity. During about a year and a half, I met and provided both in-home and restaurant meals for about 20 missionaries, mostly on P-days. Of that number, I had a 'sympatico' relationship with 6 young individuals, and of those 6, I had an extremely close relationship with 3 with whom I had in-depth conversations during their mission and that continued years after and some to this day. Love and understanding and mutual respect go a long way always ... including in the world of LDS missions and interfaith friendships. 5
Popular Post Fly Fisherman Posted January 28, 2022 Popular Post Posted January 28, 2022 I'll listen to it soon when I get time. I would really like to watch the movie also. I served my mission in the late '80s in Northern Italy. From what I understand, the documentary has a missionary experience depression and goes home 9 months early, if I am correct. I experienced severe depression on my mission, although back then, depression wasn't much known about in the mission field. If the same standards and awareness towards depression today were in place then, I probably would have been sent home. The depression I experienced made the experience, at times, excruciatingly difficult and painful. Still, I am absolutely grateful to have experienced my mission - and there were some wonderful experiences that I had and at times the depression disappeared for months at a time also. I think a lot about my mission every day. And, I was blessed to keep detailed journals of my experiences - 1,000 pages written of it. I read and relive those experiences in my journal all the time. There were miracles that I was experiencing and didn't even really realize it. 5

Craig Speechly Posted January 28, 2022 Posted January 28, 2022 My wife and I watched "The Mission" the other night. My one take away...I would have loved to have lived in one of those luxury apartments. We also got a big laugh when during one of the street meetings when a passer by yelled out "I believe in Evolution" The movie reinforced, at least to me, just how young and inexperienced in life these young LDS missionaries are. Pretty naive kids really. I can say that because I was once one of them. Cost us $20 to stream the movie through Sundance festival streaming.

I can't edit my post but wanted to add: I lived in some pretty spartan conditions during my mission, what the3se kids live in now are palaces compared to the flats we lived in.
rodheadlee Posted January 29, 2022 Author Posted January 29, 2022 Thanks for the comments. You could have knocked me over with a feather when I heard a serious Church article on in PR.
