I can see the presidents of the seventy holding keys for their work, but it would seem that in order to hold apostolic keys, one would need to be ordained an apostle.

And as long as it is the correct line of succession, and everybody ordained can trace their ordination to it, I agree. What I think is often not understood is what a great apostasy is, or refers to. People who have been properly ordained with priesthood authority can still fall into apostasy, and the more people who do fall away, the greater the apostasy is. So it doesn't matter much whether people had proper priesthood authority, i.e. to do what our Lord wanted those people to do. What matters is whether those people did what our Lord wanted them to do, rather than something contrary to his will. Edited October 13, 2021 by bOObOO
