Bill “Papa” Lee Posted November 6, 2020 Posted November 6, 2020 Although I am retired military, and retired Law-Enforcement, I have a strong electrical background. In addition to my education, I taught for 25 years at Chattahoochee Technical College, twice weekly. I know everyone has had occasional power outages, but for my fellow Saints in the Southeast, even into Texas, well any State around the “Gulf of Mexico”. Power outages are beginning to become, somewhat of a norm. So for any who may wish to know about Generators, and other measures they can take in power outages, I might be able to give suggestions, based on my experience. Of course advice is all I can do, because I can’t do anything much physically. This is not an effort to make money, I will lend my mind and experience freely, but I cannot make recommendations. So, this is not an attempt to drum up any type of business, or to refer anyone to assist someone. This is just advice, “free” technical advice, to assist my fellow members from making any often expensive mistake. Simply stated, no strings attached, no hidden agenda, just myself who has both “the time, and a desire“ to help my friends, here on this website, even if the do not see my as a friend. Also, something to keep my mind occupied, and to be “anxiously engage”, (to borrow a phrase from scripture). For any interested, you can ask here, or in a PM. Most areas should have stable power grids. But, the offer is for anyone who wishes to add to their “emergency preparedness” plans, other than just food storage. I also have other tips, based on my own observations, where I have benefited, and lessons learned due to my mistakes. Also, it would be great for others to add their “successes and failures”, in this vital area. As Latter-day Saints, being prepared, or to use the term, “emergency preparedness”, is a major part of our Faith, and “following the Prophet”. This has been a very difficult year, one is which the Lord is giving us opportunities to learn from our mistakes. Also, all States around the Gulf of Mexico, have had hard times, out West, wildfires have affected so many, and the pandemic has greater panic at times for this shopping for necessities, via shortages, brought on by panic buying. Some food items have caused increases in prices in meat, and other popular items. So, hopefully all who see this thread can give advice, outside my knowledge, or field of study. Attention Moderators: Due to the nature of this topic, and if others reply, giving either advice, or lessons learned. Even if only providing quote from Priesthood leaders, “past or present”, if you think it is of value, maybe transfer this thread to the “General Discussion Forum”. This way, others and myself will see each post. As of last, be it the pandemic, recent fires throughout the West, or the many Tropical Storms, and Hurricanes. Being prepared has and is taking on a new, and more regent meaning in the lives of the Saints. Either way, I trust your judgement. If it is not moved, maybe then it would be a great thread for someone to create a thread where we can discuss, both past and present quotes about “Emergency Preparation”. As we have all found ourselves in a very difficult, and unexpected year. 1
rpn Posted November 6, 2020 Posted November 6, 2020 I'm interesting in hearing them. (And in any new info about solar solutions for future buildings.)
Tacenda Posted November 7, 2020 Posted November 7, 2020 Great idea Papa! I think this would be great to pin for the duration of the pandemic or forever! I have all kinds of things that come to mind. Not as far as power outages so much, luckily we haven't had a problem. I am considering getting a propane/gas fireplace because when we built our recent home we only provided a gas line to our basement in case we want to put one in. In our last home we had two gas fireplaces and I remember how great it was when the power was out and we had no heat, laying by the gas fireplace staying warm. Also, if you can help, I have a bunch of 2-liter bottles filled with water. Are they safe to drink if they've been sitting for a while? They still would be great for bathing etc. though.

Home Depot does not advertise them, but on line they have a Generator that will almost anything, and it will run on propane, has an electric starter, for just $1,240.00.
