Jared Livesey Posted October 15, 2020 Posted October 15, 2020 Deut 12:32 What thing soever I command you, observe to do it: thou shalt not add thereto, nor diminish from it. Stare decisis is the legal doctrine that rules or principles of law on which a court rested a previous decision are authoritative in all future cases in which the facts are substantially the same. This leads to being governed not by the law, but by caselaw. The Lord is herein denying the principle of stare decisis, entailing that every case which should come before the priests should be determined by reference to the law alone and afresh, rather than by, for example, binding precedent transmitted along with the scriptures, such as the Talmud. Question: What does it mean to make straight the paths of the Lord? (Hint: Psalm 119:35)
Jared Livesey Posted October 15, 2020 Author Posted October 15, 2020 One of the purposes of the ministry of John, the Baptist, was to make straight the paths of the Lord. Indeed: Mark 1 1 The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God; 2 As it is written in the prophets, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee. 3 The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. Question: Why would it be necessary for the people to make straight the paths of the Lord before receiving him in person? That is: What conditions must exist for such a call to be necessary, and What happens if one does not heed the call and the Lord comes in person? (Hint: what did, in fact, happen?)

We have a common phrase today that uses the word straight in the same way it was used in those days, and it basically means to get things done in the right way, rather than in any wrong way. Now get this straight, I'm not saying we always do things the right way, even when we say and think we are. I think we need our Lord to tell us the right way to do things, and he will do that either in person through the light within him or through an appointed messenger.

Jared Livesey Posted October 16, 2020 Author Posted October 16, 2020 We recall also that Alma taught thus: Alma 37 20 Therefore I command you, my son Helaman, that ye be diligent in fulfilling all my words and that ye be diligent in keeping the commandments of God as they are written. Question: Was Alma correct in that the commandments of God are to be taken literally? If so, why? If not, why not?
