Any other time the " brother of X " is written, the name soon follows. Even the Brother of Shiblon? eventually is named as Seth I think. JS gave us the name of the brother of Jared so why did Mormon/Moroni not give the name? Is there some ancient protocol I am unaware of?

Because Mahonrimoriancumr is too many characters to engrave in reformed Egyptian.

Traela Posted September 22, 2019 Posted September 22, 2019 (edited) I'm pretty sure Ether was taking from family records. Jared probably called MM "my brother" in his journal/personal record. There is no certainty that his name was actually Moriancumer, or Mahonri Moriancumer. However, if that is his name, then the Mor- part may have been derived from Sumerian muru3,5/ murum5,11 “brother-in-law.” He may have remained unnamed due to his extraordinary holiness as a prophetic and priestly figure. Other fearsome characters typically remain unnamed, such as Lord Voldemort, or the prophetic Brother of Tecumseh, the Shawnee Chief. 2

Daniel H Ludlow suggests a few reasons he was referred to only as the Brother of Jared: (1) He may have omitted his name out of modesty (John the Beloved did essentially this same thing in the Gospel of John, which he wrote). (2) The book of Ether is clearly a family record of Jared, not of the brother of Jared; Ether—the final writer and perhaps the abridger of the record—was a descendant of Jared and might naturally have emphasized the achievements of his direct ancestor rather than the brother of his ancestor. (3) Moroni may have omitted the name in his abridgment because of difficulty in translating (or transliterating) the name into the Nephite language. In connection with this name, it is interesting to note that the major encampment of the Jaredites on the shore of "that great sea which divideth the lands" was called "Moriancumer." (Ether 2:13.)
