Elder Pearson at the FairMormon conference

I find it amazing that he would appear at the conference and give a rounding applause to the people who are defending the church on social media.

I think that the people who have been defending the church should give themselves a round of applause. Lets face it, the apologists were on the cutting edge of defending the church without the support of the lds church. It was certainly a lonely time for the defenders of the lds church as they spent hours upon hours defending the church, helping members see a different point of view from the critics that were influencing them. If we go back 10 or 15 years ago, the apologists were battle hardened. Finally, recognition has been given from the leadership. Some of the apologists should get 'awards' for the work they have done. :clapping:

One of Elder Pearson's man points is that the church cannot directly or indirectly support a group, and still have that group be considered independent with independent decisions about content and response.   The church doesn't want to replicate its PR arm, it wants faithful latterday saints to address and talk about genuine issues that arise from their living the gospel and studying the scriptures and church history, and research issues that are discussed on social media.   The Church wants members to be more open about what it is like to faithfully live and understand the gospel.

FairMormon gives an annual award at its conference to an individual who has been exemplary in defending the faith. This year, special awards were given (as a surprise) to FairMormon president Scott Gordon and to Professor Lou Midgley.

I would like to see many other individuals honored for their work in defending the faith.

All of us who've been actively involved in LDS apologetics over the years deeply appreciated Elder Pearson's remarks.

There's been a vocal claim, since at least 2012, that the leaders of the Church disdain apologetics and are disgusted with apologists.

The claim has never been true, and Elder Pearson's comments at FairMormon make that clear.

You done a wonderful job in apologetics when you were active on this board years ago. And you took much heat for it. You deserve a FairMormon award if you have not gotten one already. Thank you for the work you have done and continue to do.

I would enthusiastically concur with that. If Dr. Peterson has not yet received such an award, it is high time.
