There is only so many fish in the sea that are willing to join the Church. Perhaps we have well past the saturation point of missionaries to potential converts to the church at least in Europe and America. Perhaps we do not need more missionaries but the church just need them to "fish" in the right fishing spots where they currently exist in the Pacific Islands and Africa. I think the Church is trying to figure out how to adapt to the new social situation in the west. Thus far they really haven't adjusted in a successful way. From all indications they also aren't adjusting well to Asia and perhaps not as well to South/Central America as they should. As you note though there have been periods like this in the past. So I think it quite plausible they can successfully adjust. This is I think part of broader social changes that are affecting most Christian religions and includes not just a change in how people view religion (more focus on short term immediate benefits rather than abstract notions like sin) but also demographics (people simply are marrying late, having fewer children, etc.). Those demographic changes are important since many people in the past didn't become religious until they had kids - usually in their early to mid 20s. Edited June 12, 2017 by clarkgoble
