Derl Sanderson Posted January 26, 2017 Posted January 26, 2017 Methinks not! I am always amused by critics who paint the Latter-day Saints as being entirely comprised of lowbrow, anti-intellectuals who can only discern truth by way of a laughable "burning of the bosom" because they are incapable of intellectual rigor, all the while entirely ignoring every example to the contrary such as this: https://www.lds.org/church/news/john-w-welch-honored-for-religious-scholarly-work?lang=eng In my own lifetime, I can't think of when scholarship in the Church has ever been better. And not meaning to discount the substantive work of the past, I do wish we could more generally move beyond the James Talmage and Bruce McConkie eras in our thinking, or at least be more inclusive of the work that has been done in the past 20 years. 1

But unfortunately few in the Church pay any attention to it. How many members in the pews have ever heard of John W. Welch? I daresay not a lot. It's a shame, because Welch has been probably the most prolific and important LDS "gospel-scholar" of his generation. 1

Only if it's the tenured ivory tower variety would such a destination be automatic. There doesn't have to be a school or institution for this variety to exist. It could be a website with low quality water and electrical hookups for example....
