JAHS Posted January 24, 2017 Posted January 24, 2017 Not easy being a Bishop sometimes: A Murray man was charged Monday with stalking, threatening his LDS bishop and the bishop's family, and killing the bishop's lawn after a dispute during an admission interview for BYU-Idaho. The 30-year-old man faces charges in 3rd District Court of criminal mischief, a second-degree felony; stalking, a class A misdemeanor; and threat of violence, a class B misdemeanor. The bishop for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints told police that during a meeting regarding the man's application to attend Brigham Young University-Idaho, the man "became very angry, violent and a minor physical altercation occurred between" the two, according to charges. Between December 2015 and December 2016, the man made several threats of violence to the bishop through text messages and Facebook posts, charges state. The threats also alluded to violence toward the bishop's wife and daughter, charges said, causing the wife to "fear for her safety" and for the safety of her family members. The man told the bishop via text message that he had been instructed by police not to contact the bishop, charges state. In August, the bishop filed a report with Murray police, stating that is an unknown chemical sprayed on his lawn had killed it, according to charges. A surveillance video showed a suspect who matched the man's description spraying something on the lawn, causing $6,744 in damage. The man told a friend that he had gone to the bishop's house and sprayed pesticide on his lawn, charges said. The man also allegedly wrote a post on Facebook that he wanted to burn the bishop and the bishop's daughter alive, charges state. A $25,000 warrant for the man's arrest was issued Monday. The Nehor Posted January 24, 2017 Posted January 24, 2017 I am not sure he and the Honor Code would have gotten along very well. 4

Marmonboy Posted January 25, 2017 Posted January 25, 2017 What an idiot--he won't get in for sure now, with a criminal record.

Ironically, the bishop could have arranged for him free psychiatric care through LDS Family Services, which is what he clearly needs. If he doesn't get that needed care, he will only become more dangerous to everyone.

But I have a feeling the man was too angry at the Bishop to agree to accept such help to get therapy arranged by him. 2

katherine the great Posted January 29, 2017 Posted January 29, 2017 What is a $25,000 warrant for arrest? Is that a request for a bounty hunter? I'm not familiar with that terminology.

(Feel free to skip to the link at the bottom of the post.) I'm *not* saying pysch treatment serves no purpose. (So I'm asking politely that others not derail the thread with that red-herring argument.) For me and my house, lab-coat treatments/medications are often a dismissive, go-to Bandaid to cover over (rather than heal/restore) the underlying cause of much human suffering/pain. Getting to and healing the root cause is what's key. And comprehension/medication often doesn't address the most common root cause - a gaping void in human compassion. Many of those who study the cause of addiction have learned much the same. Which is, I suspect, in part why the brethren have been trying to encourage the church to move beyond the previous generation's unhealthy dismissive stigma associated with such so-called "illness". Most such people are simply heart-sick....sick and tired, aching to their core of what they've seen and experienced, and from subsequently being repeatedly kicked to the curb in the midst of their suffering by people otherwise professing to be kind. May the world quickly become more like this woman.....Please. http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/world-news/incredible-display-humanity-elderly-woman-7326603 Edited February 11, 2017 by hagoth7

Many people are actually helped by what you wrongly dismiss as "lab-coat" or "Bandaid" treatment. In reality, people are not treated as lab rats by the psychologists and psychiatrists I know, but are dealt with as humans in need of understanding. Often whole families are brought in for testing and counseling, and are brought back from the brink of complete collapse to live happy and meaningful lives. The resolution of problems thereby can be surprisingly effective. 2

I have suffered from depression for pretty much all my adult life. I have been to counselors, who stared blankly at me and offered nothing. I've had 10-minute appointments with a psychiatrist who simply handed out more pills. All I really wanted was someone to give a rip about me as a human being who was struggling to stay alive. A little compassion and understanding from the people around me would have worked wonders, instead of being shunned because I wasn't happy enough for them. I'm sure I would have been helped by the right combination of drugs and therapy, but I never found them. Please be compassionate to those around you who need compassion. 3

Now THAT really needs to be thundered from the rooftops. Or gently whispered. (Whichever volume the hearer needs most.) 1
VideoGameJunkie Posted March 20, 2017 Posted March 20, 2017 Bishops like psychiatrists need to be careful.
