Tacenda Posted March 30, 2016 Posted March 30, 2016 Today I started reading through LDS.org searching for various things. I opened my account, after non use for I don't know how long! I decided to try Family Search, in years past I'd had some bad luck in finding relatives names to take to the temple, for several had been done repeatedly. I happen to put in my mother's name to see just what would come up. Well I was shocked to see some info on my grandmother's biological father whom I'd been searching for. His full name was present, now I can search him out. My great grandmother didn't marry him and joined the church and moved to Utah with my 5 year old grandma! I always knew about her real dad, but apparently didn't have his full name. The reason for my search is because I named one of my sons after him. But apparently it's my great grandfather's middle name, not his first. With this new information I get to check this man out. And hopefully he's not a bad dude, that I name my son after. Wow, I just might get into some family history!! My grown daughter has expressed interest too, and she's not active, so I'll have to get her started to. Maybe it'll be my new hobby instead of Mormon Dialogue, haha! Just wanted to share, hey something positive...Pa, Pa!! And any others...you know who you are!! 3
Storm Rider Posted March 30, 2016 Posted March 30, 2016 Family Search really is amazing. I work primarily on Ancestry.com through Family Tree Maker. I work on family history at least four times a week; it is my main hobby. My wife and children accuse me of talking to dead people more than I talk to the living. Last week I got back from a French family reunion in Florida. It was great to see distant relatives, renew acquaintances, and friendships. My grandmother was Martha French. My g-gmother was Candace French. She never married while having children, but each was named French rather than take the name of the father. As far as I can tell all of her children were born of the same married man who did not live far from her home in northwest Florida. She must have been a strong woman in those days. What I have learned is that Mormons were hardly the only ones that practiced a form of plural wives. I know of several incidences in the south - both before and after the Civil War - where men had multiple wives. Glad to see you have found some new information and renew your search for your ancestors. 1

Storm Rider Posted April 25, 2016 Posted April 25, 2016 I think you will find many LDS in Utah that have pioneer history to be related to many of the individuals that were present at the founding of the Church and/or being in Nauvoo. One of the things that I found out about my own family - we are converts to the Church - is that we had a relative join the Church back in 1893 in the panhandle of Florida. She was my grandmother's sister. The family never discussed this, ever. Though everyone knew we were Mormons and we knew that there were some distant cousins were Mormons and attend our little branch no one ever said G-Aunt Becky was a member. Even my cousins never mentioned it. I wished we could have talked about when she was alive. My wife's family first joined the church in 1832 in New York. They were in Nauvoo and were pioneers across the US to Utah. We have two very different family histories. Her family is full of kings, queens, nobility, etc. and my family is strictly Heinz 57 American. 1

It's usually through Hyrum's direct descendants or one of Joseph's uncle's descendants (John Smith or Silas Smith, Joseph Smith Sr.'s brothers). Some of Joseph's direct descendants have now joined the church, but as far as I know, none of them originally followed Brigham out to Utah or stayed in the church at that time.
