The interesting thing about encyclopedias is that they are meant to provide (fairly) brief, general overviews of the entry. Of necessity there will be oversimplification and distortion as the subject is condensed into an entry. You cannot really fit too much nuance and such in to it. Or at least, why do you make it so easy? Your frank admission that you have not "read everything you say" might explain why you are wrong so often, fail to keep the discussion in context and don't address the issues I raise. I think it would be good practice for you to start reading everything if you want to engage in a meaningful dialogue that isn't punctuated so frequently by your being wrong. The fact of the matter is that I have explained why, now go back and read my posts properly and report back when you have found my explanation. 1 hour ago, TheSkepticChristian said: ....and I did. No you have not. Please explain to me why the articles you have linked too, which you have placed your entire argument on, are reliable if they do not discuss any no long-term studies or epidemiological analysis. 1 hour ago, TheSkepticChristian said: What long-term effects? Oh good grief. Skeptic you are completely out of your depth here and with this statement you have actually proven my point. There are no studies on the long term effects of GMO food, that is the point, that is the issue. If there are no long term studies then how can it possibly be determined that GMO is safe? 1 hour ago, TheSkepticChristian said: You can't do long-term studies on a human... This is almost beyond belief. So science cannot do long-term studies on a human? Skeptic you simply do not belong here, you have absolutely no place in any discussion regarding science. My question regarding there being no studies on the long-term health effects of GM food is meaningless in a discussion that is about the safety of humans eating GM food? It doesn't happen too often but I am lost for words to describe the illogical stupidity of this statement. You do not belong in any discussion regarding science. 1 hour ago, TheSkepticChristian said: Here is a very important paper An overview of the last 10 years of genetically engineered crop safety research Did you pay the US$54 to read the article or are you just linking to it because you think its title supports your position. Answer me this Skeptic - does this article address long-term studies and epidemiological analysis regarding GM food and human health - yes or no? If you have not actually read this article then you are guilty of intellectual dishonesty and a breach of some fairly fundamental scientific ethics. I know that this is not the first time during our few discussions that you have been guilty of this conduct, and you seem quite fine doing it, but to my mind this is simply another reason why you do not belong in any discussion regarding science. 1 hour ago, TheSkepticChristian said: Listen dude, it would be very hard to replace all fields with greenhouse facilities. I don't think many countries in Africa can afford to make them everywhere. 1ha of land using the scientific technology I referenced can produce 20 - 30 times the amount of food produced via conventional farming. As such you can approach this three ways: 1. Build greenhouse facilities the same size as the current agricultural fields and get 20 - 30 times the production from the same area. 2. Reduce the total area currently used for agriculture, build the greenhouse facility and maintain current production levels. 3. Reduce the total area currently used for agriculture, build the greenhouse facility and increase current production levels but not to the extent of a 20 - 30 times increase. Let me restate a couple of comments I have already made, hopefully it sinks in this time: 1. Did you read my summary of the paper I referenced regarding the scientific technology? It seems to me that either you haven't read it or you simply cannot comprehend it. So lets break it down very simply for you - if an area the size of 1 ha can produce 600 tons of fruit and vegetables and 200 tons of meat and fish products then what will 2 ha produce? What will 3 ha product? What will 300 ha produce? What will 100,000 ha produce? 2. After initial capital outlay to construct the growing facility, the food can be produced significantly cheaper than conventional farming systems. On average a conventional farming system will produce 30 tons of tomatoes per ha. A standard greenhouse or indoor growing system, such as hydroponics or geothermal, will produce 120 tons per ha. The most advanced indoor growing systems will produce 800 tons per ha, a 2566% increase over the conventional farming system and a 566% increase over the standard indoor growing system. Since the advanced indoor growing systems are...well...you know....indoors, and in a climate controlled environment, how will global warming affect this operation. Like I said, climate change need not have any impact whatsoever on food availability. Read these two points over and over again until they sink in and then report back. 1 hour ago, TheSkepticChristian said: It doesn't make sense because it would be extraordinarily expensive and hard, but we will be force to do it if our planet becomes 5 degrees warmer. This explanation does not change the fact that you contradicted yourself. Now, you have objected to the technology on economic grounds on a number of occasions, so please, tell me how much it will cost to build a 1ha greenhouse facility. You must know because you have made the claim that it would be too expensive, so what is the cost? I know one way we could fund greenhouse facilities in places like Africa, we could stop spending so much money on out dated technologies, like GMO, and put it into advanced technologies. You have also objected to the technology on the grounds of it being too hard, so please, tell me what is so hard about replicating something very similar to greenhouse facilities all over the world? 1 hour ago, TheSkepticChristian said: Nice try. That was a nice try on your part to divert attention away from your contradiction. Sorry but you were caught out. Look, I wouldn't worry about your contradictions too much, you have other things that are far more embarrassing than contradictions to worry about. 1 hour ago, TheSkepticChristian said: I am busy, I will get back to you later. You don't have too...I mean really, its not bother to me if you don't However if you do get back to me, then you are required to answer all my questions. You yourself have said that you will answer all my questions so I think its about time that you honoured your word. You keep coming back with irrelevant nonsense and thereby avoid my questions and the real issues. These are the questions that remain unanswered and you are required to answer them in the context that they were asked: 1. Since the advanced indoor growing systems are...well...you know....indoors, and in a climate controlled environment, how will global warming affect this operation? 2. Due to you being made aware of the latest scientific advancements in food production, do you maintain the position that climate change will necessarily make food scarcity worse? 3. Did you do as I instructed? Did you go back to my post where I first referenced the technology and get the answer regarding seafood? 4. Have a guess which Missouri headquartered corporation funded that study? 5. Are you seriously questioning why there hasn't been a worldwide adoption of advanced scientific technologies in place of inferior technologies? 6. Do you really believe that the most widely adopted technologies are the best and represent all that is currently available? 7. Why is out dated, inferior and superseded technology, such as GMO for increased food production, still being used? 8. Do you really believe that you know enough of the GMO issue, after having read "some papers", to make the matter of fact statements you did? 9. Or, in your expert opinion, do you believe that the safety of food can be established without studies on the long term effects and epidemiological analysis? 10. Do you think any scientist can make the legitimate claim that GMO foods are safe if there have been no studies on long term effects and no epidemiological analysis? 11. I have attached a picture of a greenhouse facility in Spain, it covers an area of 100,000 ha. In your view does 100,000 ha qualify as an entire field? 12. Since you have read some of these articles can you advise the results of the studies on long term effects and epidemiological analysis? 13. So lets break it down very simply for you - if an area the size of 1 ha can produce 600 tons of fruit and vegetables and 200 tons of meat and fish products then what will 2 ha produce? What will 3 ha product? What will 300 ha produce? What will 100,000 ha produce? 14. Are you seriously unable 2 comprehend man kinds ability 2 build a greenhouse in practically any location? Where is your faith in science now? 15. You said you would answer all my questions. Can I believe you? 16. Why are you ignoring the obvious flaws in the reports? 17. Why are you ignoring reputable reports that say GMO is not safe? 18. Are you saying that the science doesn't need 2 be done? Should we instead just have faith? 19. Do you believe that science should be limited by how long it takes 2 come up with the answers? 20. Does it matter how long it takes to scientifically determine the safety of GMO? 21. Why do you feel you have the ability to argue about a subject that you fully admit you "know very little" about? 22. Are you arguing just for the sake of being argumentative, are you arguing because of a preconceived idea or bias, or are you arguing simply because you don't want 2 admit that you are wrong yet again? 23. So you admit you don't know enough about the issue, then why on earth do you feel you are in a position to argue about it? Once you have provided answers to these questions I will then require you to address the issues that you have ignored. I will list them once you have answered all the questions. thesometimesaint Posted March 8, 2016 Posted March 8, 2016 (edited) There is a lot of misunderstanding on both sides. GMO as understood by the public mostly refers to organisms modified by placing a different species' DNA directly into the cell of the host organism. While scientists generally refer to GMO as any modification of genetic traits by any means available, including selective breeding. Neither one is totally correct. With any new technology there is the filtering out effect. With time standardization becomes the norm.
