St. Bookmark Posted January 24, 2016 Posted January 24, 2016 Today in Sunday school we talked about the discovery of America and one of the students said that king Solomon had established a trade route with the Americas. i heard about this before I was a member of the church and now that iam a member of the church and knowing about the Book of Mormon I find this fascinating and it opens up a lot of knew ideas. i will study more in detail and ask what have you guys know about this.

Does that Freeman Center have anything to do with our Church? It's a pretty cool legend but it would be miraculous to prove it. 3 years is plenty of time for a circumnavigation. A return to the Mediterranean coast of Israel would be a simple thing. Red Sea south along Africa, around the cape to the Gulf Stream in the Atlantic. It would take you right by the East Coast of the USA, not to mention the Yucatan Peninsula. Follow the Gulf Stream to the latitude of the Straits of Gibraltar and in to Israel.

Don't see sufficient evidence for it, but there is real evidence that the Ancient Egyptians used tobacco, so an ancient trade route may have occurred.
strappinglad Posted January 25, 2016 Posted January 25, 2016 The record of what the ships of Tarshish brought back includes gold,silver, ivory, apes and peacocks. All these could be found in Africa and at best India, no need to sail to the Americas. As Rev said there is evidence in Egyptian mummies of tobacco and cocaine which, as far as we know, originate in the Americas so it is possible that intercontinental trade existed.
