When Christians Love Theology More Than People

The problem is that when we "work on understanding theology," the temptation is there to believe our understandings are right.

Because our understandings are right, they are therefore God's understandings.

They are the Truth.

And the fact that others believe things different than the Truth almost invariably leads to judgmentalism.

And judgmentalism is always un-Christlike.

Please keep that in mind as you review some of your judgments in this forum.

What is your judgment of the "established patriarchy," Consig?

and yet Christ is our judge. He commands us to judge. He had his servant moroni show us how to judge. Why then would our perfect example judge, command us to judge, and show us how to if we aren't supposed to make judgments?

So are you saying we should not study the scriptures?

Of course not.

It is my study of the scriptures that has led me to this conclusion.

That and the spirit of revelation.

Latter-day Saints aren't supposed to rely solely "our understandings".  We are instead instructed as follows in Proverbs 3:5: "Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding."  Hence the benefit of having prophets and apostles, an open canon, continuing revelation, a visible Church, and so on.  If my "understanding" accords with what I read in the scriptures and hear from the Lord's anointed servants, then my understanding of an issue is much more likely to be correct.  Conversely, if what I believe is at odds with scripture and with what the Brethren are saying, then I should probably re-evaluate my understanding of the issue.

You have just provided the perfect circle of how it is Mormons are supposed to follow their leaders no matter what, and the only purpose of individual revelation is to confirm what it is the leaders have said.

Thus rendering individual revelation virtually meaningless.

Nice work!

That the worst of them is more Christ-like than you, Russell.

Knock it off.

I think you may be caviling about a definition of judgment that should be plain to all Mormons by now.

But I will rehearse it here in brief nevertheless.

We must judge many things.

But the one thing we are forbidden to judge is each other.

Clear enough?

We should love theology or doctrine the same as people.  It is not one or the other.  It is like choosing one leg over the other.  One needs both legs to run.

Jesus commanded we love our neighbor.

Jesus never commanded we love theology.

And yet Christ does judge others. He frequently called the Pharisees hypocrites and liars. So how then is it unchristlike?

Going by that standard, it would also be Christlike to overturn all the merchandise tables in City Creek Mall.

But I wouldn't recommend it . . .

On further reflection, I think you make an interesting point, Avatar.

Jesus definitely didn't practice what he preached.

Did he?

If you want to understand what this article is talking about just read the responses to the now closed thread "A Mormon Gay Man's Story"

Not feeling much love there. It is all about defending dogma.

Nice work!

Malarky.  But it's Christmas Eve, so I don't care!

Merry Christmas!

There is some truth in that.
