Hey guys, my first post here. Just a little background here...

I grew up as a Christian but I always felt that the whole church was lacking and I never maintained interest for more than a few months.

I was always interested in the book of Mormon, but I never had access to it.

Earlier this year I ran into a couple missionaries while I was going for a walk and I received a copy of the book of Mormon. I slowly started to read it and it brought me out of my depression. I was baptized and then started going to church but slowly faded back into my Christian faith because there weren't any limitations on what I put into my body as pertaining to teas and coffee.

Anyways I'm just getting back into the swing of things and reading my scriptures. I'm just wondering if its safe to read the New King James Version of the bible?

What do you mean by safe?

I don't think there is any translation of the Bible that would be unsafe to read; some, including the KJV, have translation choices that are heavily weighted towards a particular theological position if that is what you are concerned about.

Hello Frankie,

As a Church we tend to use the King James Version, but there is not a prohibition from reading other translations/versions, etc.  I have several different versions in my home for study purposes.  However, when I want to read the Bible I almost always prefer the KJV; I just find it a very beautiful text.  Read what you speaks most easily to you.

The Word of Wisdom is worth studying.  Go back and read the 89th Section of the Doctrine & Covenants and study the section.  There is a reason it is called a Word of Wisdom.  Striving to maintain a holy temple for the Spirit to dwell is important.  As you gain a testimony of this concept living the WofW will be much easier.

I hope your desire to become closer to the Spirit is rewarded with a deeper relationship with the Savior and love of our Father in Heaven.

I mean is it going to tweak the message away from the truth

First of all, welcome FrankieD3

May I ask... why were you baptized?  It is obvious you are very confused and don't know that we, too, are Christians to begin with...

Second, we normally use the King James Version of the bible as part of our "canon" or scriptures so why would it be unsafe to read, even the new version... we have 1) the KJV Bible, 2) the Book of Mormon, 3) the Doctrine & Covenants, and 4) the Pearl of Great Price that we use as our scriptures... some members prefer to have another version of the bible that is a little easier reading than the KJV...

Third, the Book of Mormon is not and has never been considered "the Mormon Bible" or "Gold Bible."  It does not replace the Bible, but goes hand in hand with the bible...  It is available from any LDS ward (congregation/Church bldg)... or online... and in every public library...

Are you even familiar with the Doctrine & Covenants and Pearl of Great Price?  Have you read them?

What do you know and understand about what the Church calls the Plan of Salvation or Plan of Happiness and the doctrines taught?

I'm thrilled you're a member of the Church, but I think you need to study more, and certainly attend Church... did you take the "discussions" from the missionaries?  If not, that would be a good place to start...

Again, I do welcome you... many good people here who I know wish you well...
