KevinG Posted August 25, 2015 Posted August 25, 2015 I am acquainted with only one LDS who is racist. He went totally inactive the day he saw a mixed-race couple kneeling across from each other in a temple sealing room. He's a great guy, and has nothing against people of other races (he'd risk his life to save anyone from danger, regardless of race), but he just thinks white people are superior. I tried to talk him out of his racism, but was unsuccessful. It's been awhile since I saw him, so it's possible he might have re-entered activity, but I have my doubts. And he can't find any other LDS to join him in his racist attitudes, which is at least part of the reason he has withdrawn from activity. You have provided a key for others to see truth from. We shall see if they use it. The last time I was in a church setting where race was discussed in such a fashion, I was with the Elders visiting an investigator. When the elderly lady started talking about the "darkies" we excused ourselves and exited her abode post haste! The Elders commented that the spirit there was not conducive to teaching the Gospel.
Stargazer Posted August 25, 2015 Posted August 25, 2015 Years ago I knew a member who was racist. The problem is he didn't realize it. How many racists recognize their racism? Very darned few, I suggest. 1
ttribe Posted August 25, 2015 Posted August 25, 2015 Years ago I knew a member who was racist. The problem is he didn't realize it. We have membership all over the world, from a huge diversity of backgrounds and education and our numbers are in the millions. Of course we have some racist members. Statistics and common sense tell us so. Should they know better? Absolutely. But, it is folly to suggest there are none altogether.
ttribe Posted August 25, 2015 Posted August 25, 2015 How many racists recognize their racism? Very darned few, I suggest. Pretty sure most of them are, literally, card carrying members of certain groups that openly espouse racist ideals (e.g. KKK, Neo-Nazi, Aryan Brotherhood, etc.).
