I think that depends who you believe and what you consider "left the Church".Heber C. Kimball said in JD 4:108 that:I went over about the time when the Church was broken up in Kirtland, and when there were not twenty persons on the earth that would declare that Joseph Smith was a Prophet of God. When we returned from England, we could report from two thousand to twenty-five hundred Saints added to the Church, after being away about eleven months.

I think those who remained in Missouri thought that most left ... especially those who wentas far away as Utah. According to D&C 101:1-8, 100, the saints in Missouri were cast outof the lands of their inheritance due to their transgressions. Regards,Jim

Regards,Jim It is a continuing source of amusement to me how anti-Mormons almost reflexively support the claims of apostate/schismatic groups; even the mutually exclusive claims of rival apostate/schismatic groups. The reason this is so amusing is that if the anti-Mormons really believed the claims of those groups for as much as a second, they'd be attacking those groups. But they don't. Instead, they attack us. Just like their predecessors attacked Joseph. And the reason for that is that ours is the church that Joseph founded. The first generation anti-Mormons attacked Joseph and those who believed him. This generation of anti-Mormons continue to attack Joseph and the church that he founded. Thus demonstrating that the groups up to which they so obligingly schmooze are not that church. However much they'd like to persuade anyone otherwise. 2

Backman, Jr., The Heavens Resound: A History of the Latter-day Saints in Ohio, 1830–1838 (Salt Lake City: Deseret Book, 1983), 328: "Between November 1837 and June 1838, possibly two or three hundred Kirtland Saints withdrew from the Church, representing from 10 to 15 percent of the membership there. Many of the apostates had served in major positions of responsibility. During a nine-month period, almost one-third of the General Authorities were excommunicated, disfellowshipped, or removed from their Church callings." 2

I'll agree with your statement that he founded the LDS Church, but do you view all peoplewho publicly express what they believe to be the false teachings of Joseph Smith asconstituting an attack on him?
