Garden Girl Posted November 16, 2013 Posted November 16, 2013 (edited) When I was a girl in 9th grade, we had a couple of new young teachers from back east... my home room teacher and my phys ed teacher. They were probably in their mid-twenties. This was their first year teaching in Calif and of course they were missing family and friends. I remember as we were approaching Christmas break they were so excited to be going home... a popular song of the day was "I'll Be Home for Christmas" sung by Perry Como and they used to break into song every now and then as they could hardly wait to go home. We used to have a Christmas Ball at the teen canteen... semi formal with a live band... and then a New Year's Eve dance also... Most years we'd get a couple hours sleep and then get up early New Year's Day and drive into Pasadena CA to watch the Rose Parade... We'd get home just in time to watch the Rose Bowl football game on our very small screened TVs...I didn't mind the Christmas music then... perhaps because Christmas was not as commercial... and, something that would never happen today... we had a wide grassy divider down the center of Riverside Avenue, the main street... and every Christmas there were lifesize wooden figures of the Three Wisemen, shepherds, sheep, etc., down the length of the divider, all leading up to a full Nativity scene. It was a tradition that I had loved seeing since I was a small child... No one stole or vandalized the figures or the nativity... no one complained they were offended or demanded we have additional viewpoints/faiths represented...Anyway, as the years have gone by it seems, at least to me, that some of the old fashioned feeling of Christmas has been lost, and that affects my feelings about Christmas music today... from the beach on a cold November morn...
