Damien the Leper Posted October 16, 2013 Author Posted October 16, 2013 I am a member of my religion...they don't govern me. They help give me direction and I govern myself, if anyone other than me governs myself it is scripture I believe came from God...thus God himself. But if govern means to control to some, even God does not control me....he gave me free will. True but religions that tell you what to do and how to live your life are hardly useful in a sociological and psychological sense.

Damien the Leper Posted October 16, 2013 Author Posted October 16, 2013 (edited) Then why do studies on health tend to rate religious individuals higher in health, emotional and physical? Perhaps it is the appeal of the mystical as a psychological comfort blanket. It helps one sleep better at night. I'm reminded of the end of the Revelation; the happy ending and the connection to Resurrection at the empty Tomb. While they are very inspirational and comforting to the soul they do little to mask the carnal nature of divine war and bloodshed. A former professor of mine spoke of an apocalyptic writing in which the happy ending is the entire world being burned with everyone in it. This does little to relieve stress so we tend to avoid rabid and vengeful attributes to superior beings. We forget they like that their narcissism and power goes unchallenged lest we be damned. Just my thoughts. ETA: I am curious to find out if in all the ancient mystical writings that there may be a way to close both the gates of heaven and the gates of hell. That would be fun.
