Lizzy Hale and her bandmates obviously wanted to get a perspective across that dealt with living life, not on the terms of others or institutions, but on their own terms and be able to look back at it be like "Yeah...that me/us! What of it?". It reminds of a quote I once heard: "A friend will bail you out of jail. A best friend for life will sit in jail with you and say, 'Damn that was a good time!'"
