Tacenda Posted July 1, 2013 Posted July 1, 2013 http://rationalfaiths.com/the-grand-fundamental-principle-of-mormonism/When you click on this site, he mentions that he recorded his lesson in the 5th Sunday combined RS/PH. This would never happen in Utah, as mentioned. Is this needed? I'm amazed actually, and it's a breath of clean fresh air. For people in the church that go through this challenge, the challenge of doubt, and have everyone in on why, would be a godsend. If this church is to stand amidst this and continue on, we need to get to the true history and then keep moving forward after that. That is a testimony not only on faith of things unseen but faith of what is seen or fact. There is scripture that faith needs back up to be believed. I'll retrieve it if anyone wants me to.

I don't see it much of a stretch to see it done for a combined 5th Sunday as we've had some classes that might be seen as unusual by others. I think it really depends on where one lives in Utah. It seems like there are little microcosms of church culture that can vary widely in just a few miles. If you keep saying this will never happen in Utah...it won't. At least not in your part of it. But it's possible that it's all in my head. Or it's no big deal to others. And people like me are delusional. Who'd a thunk it? I'm not being sarcastic here. It may well be that hundreds are making a mountain out of a mole hill.

I think wards can develop their own culture by leadership choosing other leaders and teachers who have adopted the same sort of culture. It becomes self-perpetuating and if established long enough, even a leader who is of a different mode may not make much of an impact. Our area has an interesting mix of BYU and UVU profs and others of similar career levels of education and more blue collar types whose families have been in the area for generations. The mix was here before I got here so I don't know if the actual dynamic is that having roots here for a long time led to enough core people who were very familiar with the Church's history mixed with people who enjoy studying, including many focusing on church doctrine and history, but it seems likely that both factors have at least played into it.
Damien the Leper Posted July 1, 2013 Posted July 1, 2013 Personally, I believe that everything in the FP Vault and the closed BYU archives should be opened up for public and academic examination. Not because I believe the church has anything to hide but because I believe there is more to learn. Open them up and we can get the critics to shut up.
