Traela Posted April 18, 2013 Posted April 18, 2013 My son just got his mission call! He'll enter the MTC on August 28. He seemed very pleased his assignment, at least until I read the part about needing thermal underwear OVER his temple garments.

Except for the Oilers NHL team but whatever! Congrats!!!! There is a member who posts here on occasion who lives there
Nathair/|\ Posted April 18, 2013 Posted April 18, 2013 You should be aware that the border between Canada and the US is the leading edge of a massive glacier about 40 feet tall. To get around in Canada, you have to hire dogsleds. Close to the border, snowmobiles are occasionally available, but the cost of shipping fuel is prohibitive and the cold makes metal and plastic parts exceedingly brittle. Further, Canada is home to many dangerous monsters, including the Wendigo, which can be found haunting every blizzard. 3
Buzzard Posted April 18, 2013 Posted April 18, 2013 BTW, Thermal garments are of very high quality. I have found that they keep me warm in whatever I run into here in Utah, even in high mountains. I fully realize that Utah is not Edmonton.
Calm Posted April 18, 2013 Posted April 18, 2013 (edited) I would suggest getting a very high quality coat...since he is going up in the summer or fall, maybe even waiting until he gets there to get one. Maybe one that you can take the lining out on warmer days. The coats we bought up in Canada were tons better than the ones we could get down here for the same price and they were built for the weather.Shoes too, maybe a dress boot if they are allowed...we'd have missionaries stop by to thaw out from time to time during winters up in Calgary and they would on occasion moan about the misery of wet feet, frozen hands, etc. So good quality socks and maybe a silk or some other type of thermal sock liner to help with that. REI or another hiking/outdoor shop would likely have the best ones.Tell him to be prepared to take his shoes off when he enters a home....so new socks and plenty of them so he's not stuck with embarrassing holes. It does get very dark during the winter, but that is made up for by having these lovely long summer days...though it's not always that hot even if the sun is out that much. One year we had snow every month of the year (last day in August and early July). Edited April 18, 2013 by calmoriah

Calm Posted April 18, 2013 Posted April 18, 2013 I know the missionaries in the Canadian mission here are told to buy all the winter stuff when they get here for the reasons you sayIt is just so much better quality in my experience, my winter coat looks pretty new even after 15 years and none of the zippers are broken or seams falling apart. My winter/hiking boots are almost in the same condition, have had to replace the laces.

I bought a blue Canada Snow Goose heavy parka 13 years ago and it is still good, no problems and I love it!
blackstrap Posted April 19, 2013 Posted April 19, 2013 With the advent of global warming, Edmonton is much nicer . Winters are better now than even 15 years ago. The truly miserable weather has moved back east to the Ontario and Quebec area. They deserve it. 2

oats Posted April 20, 2013 Posted April 20, 2013 I believe the Edmonton mission covers up North into the Fort MacMurray, High Level and maybe even Fort St John areas. Those are quite far North and can get very cold. That said, if he is arriving in those areas in Sept (based on his MTC date) he'll hit all the Winter clothing sales. Better yet, hit up the second hand stores. Don't buy the cheap Chinese knock off brands. You don't want a jacket filled with chicken feathers in -40 degree windstorms.I'm curious what missions cover the territories, and if there are missionaries in Whitehorse, Yellowknife and Nunavut.

Duncan Posted April 20, 2013 Posted April 20, 2013 Are those dog sled missions instead of bicycles?probably snowmobiles
Grundelwalken Posted April 20, 2013 Posted April 20, 2013 Are those dog sled missions instead of bicycles? When I served up there (mid 70's) Yelloeknife was part of our mission. They only sent missionary couples and they had to be flown in. I concur on getting cols weather when he gets there. My 'warm' Arizona clothes were useless that first winter. MW 1
Calm Posted April 20, 2013 Posted April 20, 2013 Better yet, hit up the second hand stores. Don't buy the cheap Chinese knock off brands. Very good advice...don't shop Walmart or the other department stores, go for the speciality stores if he can't find stuff in the secondhand or talk another missionary into selling him stuff before going home and get Canadian made in these cases. Well worth the investment (and if he is never likely to use it again being from a warm enough climate, he can sell them to a new missionary when he is leaving). This is the Edmonton site of the store we got our stuff at: http://www.mec.ca/AST/ContentPrimary/Services/Stores/Edmonton.jsp
blackstrap Posted April 21, 2013 Posted April 21, 2013 Now,if you are looking for a 'serious ' coat , I have an original black wool sheepskin that was made and used by the Hutterites when all they drove were horse drawn wagons. Nothing gets through this coat . Mind you , it's a bit bulky and not in fashion. 3
