thesometimesaint Posted December 4, 2012 Posted December 4, 2012 You don't have to believe anything. But it is a double standard to use one standard for one group and not the other. As to polygamy God doesn't seem to have a problem with it as shown in the Bible.
Scott Lloyd Posted December 4, 2012 Posted December 4, 2012 I guess we're all "right" on this matter. I can't keep dwelling on it, sorry for the rehash. This doesn't make sense. Two conflicting premises can't both be right.

volgadon Posted December 4, 2012 Posted December 4, 2012 Acts 17:30"And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent:"God is a patient Father. There is a difference between winking at something and sanctioning it.
thesometimesaint Posted December 4, 2012 Posted December 4, 2012 Seeing that the majority of earthlings aren't Christian. You don't have to believe anything. He certainly has patience with me.
Tacenda Posted December 4, 2012 Posted December 4, 2012 This doesn't make sense. Two conflicting premises can't both be right.Others are right because God allowed polygamy and I guess instigated it, in certain situations. I'm right because He also forbade it. So we're both right. I did some studying, shocking I know! But like I said before, I shouldn't keep rehashing the polygamy thing since it's what started me on my faith crisis in the first place.
thesometimesaint Posted December 4, 2012 Posted December 4, 2012 Tacenda:While I have no desire for the return of polygamy to the Church, at least in this life. It is one of those things that never really caused me to lose a moment of sleep. Let alone a crises of faith. 1

This is pure LDS orthodoxy, and if you believe and accept it, there is no reason to be having a crisis of faith over it. 1
Mola Ram Suda Ram Posted December 4, 2012 Posted December 4, 2012 (edited) God "gave" David Saul's wives and concubines in the same way any conquering king might take the defeated king's possessions. Giving or taking is not the same thing as God "commanding" David to practice polygamy. It may have been a custom, but it was most certainly not a command from God.This is silly. It is clear from biblical text that God has no issues with Polygamy. Were is the commandment that forbids it? That is the bigger question. For with out a commandment against it you cannot claim it a bad thing. You know what God said about he who has to be commanded in all things..... Edited December 4, 2012 by Mola Ram Suda Ram
Hamba Tuhan Posted December 5, 2012 Posted December 5, 2012 I shouldn't keep rehashing the polygamy thing since it's what started me on my faith crisis in the first place.I can certainly understand this if one embraces the straw-man portrayal constructed by our critics. Rongo's original post, however, demonstrated some of the enormous distance between that misleading portrayal and reality. 2
Azariah Posted December 5, 2012 Posted December 5, 2012 This is silly. It is clear from biblical text that God has no issues with Polygamy. Were is the commandment that forbids it? That is the bigger question. For with out a commandment against it you cannot claim it a bad thing. You know what God said about he who has to be commanded in all things.....I never said polygamy was "a bad thing." However, there is no evidence in the Bible that God ever commanded someone to enter into the practice. Yes, God allowed or permitted it's practice just as God allowed and permits us to commit sin, free agency and all that. The evidence is pretty clear that along with polygamy came a lot of problems. So, if a person wants that type of responsibility and they can handle the problems that go along with it, then so be it. The same thing can be said of marriage. Marriage is a wonderful covenant. However, it too has many difficulties and challenges. Now, just multiply the challenges that come with being married by the number of wives a man has and you've multiplied your problems.
Azariah Posted December 5, 2012 Posted December 5, 2012 I can certainly understand this if one embraces the straw-man portrayal constructed by our critics. Rongo's original post, however, demonstrated some of the enormous distance between that misleading portrayal and reality. What is the "straw-man" portrayal constructed by your critics?
Hamba Tuhan Posted December 5, 2012 Posted December 5, 2012 What is the "straw-man" portrayal constructed by your critics?A good place to start might be the topic of this thread: 'the claim that the Church used to teach that polygamy is required for exaltation throughout all ages (and their claim that this teaching is irrevocable by later prophets, and that attempts to do so constitute a heavy blow to Mormon truth claims)'. I wish I had a dollar for every time I'd read some part of this claim somewhere -- and yet, as rongo has demonstrated, it's utterly false. And then there are those who claim that 19th-century Mormon polygamy was all about sex. Or power. Or control of women. Or competition between men.I finished my PhD in history 11 months ago, and my goal throughout the entire process was to create a narrative which, though necessarily flawed, would at least be recognisable to the people whose history it is. All the histrionic portrayals of early Mormon polygamy would be totally alien to the people who actually practiced it. But they make excellent brickbats for those wishing to take a swing at the Church of Jesus Christ. 3
volgadon Posted December 5, 2012 Posted December 5, 2012 Yes, God allowed or permitted it's practice just as God allowed and permits us to commit sin, free agency and all that.Yet the verse in question is one where God sanctions polygamy.
