Mormon Pharisees

In my family's last ward, my deacon son's priesthood teacher and Sunday School teacher occasionally criticized Catholics and how they pray and worship. My son was upset. In this ward, his priesthood advisor recently said the same kinds of things about Catholics in deacon's quorum. Yesterday, the advisor picked my son up for a mutual activity and on the way mocked beer drinkers. Cue gravelly, redneck drawl: "yeaaa I need me some beer! And then I'm gittin' my smokes!" My son told me all about these things in tears. I'm a beer drinking Catholic. He's crushed and doesn't want to go back to church. In his mind, his dad is being mocked. So, thank you Mormon Pharisees, for focusing on how other people worship God wrong and judging them. You're driving my boy right out of your church. I'll bet my son's experience is not unique.

Yeah, what those Mormons did was wrong. I'm sorry that your son had to listen to such. My apologies.

My post is addressed to Mormon Pharisees.

Nonetheless, we feel necessary to apologize about these Mormon Pharisees. It's the right thing to do.

Addressed though in such a way that it is easily read as a blanket accusation of LDS. A pity, too, as behaviour like what you've described is wrong. My brother has also suffered from similar behaviour to what you've described.

That gives me an idea for a post about all the nonmormons who come her to post about how bad all us mormons are.

Seriously, some people can only justify their beliefs by making fun of others. If I were you I would confront this individual, beer and cigaret in hand, and ask him to repeat what he told your son. If you do that I don't think you'll hear another word about it.

I'll be doing that in every single ward then. Without the cig, as I don't smoke. It's unfortunate it has to be that way.

I don't know how you can generalize an entire religion based on your limited experience. That is the definition of prejudice.

Perhaps it would be kind to your son for you or your wife or better both (assuming you are married as you are Catholic) to go see the Bishop and explain to him that this is a problem and ask him to address it among the leaders and teachers (assuming your son wouldnt feel comfortable with the bishop talking in sacrament meeting to the whole ward though it would be good for all to hear). Hopefully it will make things better for your son and you will have done a great service to the ward members by reminding them how they should be treating others.

I heard it every ward from some leader growing up and now my son has heard it in every ward on two continents since becoming a deacon - 3 for 3. Like I said, my post intended for all Mormons, just the Pharisees among you. Only they should take offense (which isn't why I posted at all. I'm just feeling bad for my boy that he keeps being exposed to this no matter where we move).

Does your son have any particular reason to suspect that you are being mocked in his presence, because of your religion or your appreciation of mild drinks? Or is it more a matter of someone acting crudely, or perhaps some hypersensitivity of your son, since he is so close to the issue at hand?

There is a part-member family in our ward, whose father is not the member. The daughters in the family have all grown up now and left the nest married (all in the Temple), but in years past it seemed that every time the subject of "Get Married in the Temple to a Worthy Priesthood Holder" came up in a Sunday School, Primary, or Young Women lesson, certain of this family's daughters would get offended and complain about their Dad being put down. Their father was not what you might call an "active non-member", but he was well-known enough to the long-time members and was well-respected as well. It seemed to me to be more a case of his daughters being defensive and perhaps hypersensitive due to their own closeness to the issue, rather than anyone's intent to be offensive.

Pharisees are found in every walk of life... Too many see there standing before God as a race against others and because they are turned in a false direction they are skewed in their understanding of the gospel. Elder Holland, a leader in our church and believed by us to be one of Christ's living apostles, says this is not a race against others but a race against sin. might you kindly take this man aside and speak to him or might you talk to his Bishop who will certainly address this.

My son has described teachers mimicking Catholics at prayer

Right down to mimicking the motions of the fingers while praying the Rosary and mimicking use of a Missal to read written prayers?

and imitating beer drinkers as if they're all drunks. Not very nice.

Most beer drinkers I knew were drunks, many of whom never would admit that they were drunks. That is a hard stereotype to get around and is not necessarily specific to you or to anyone else in reality other than real beer-drinkers who really get drunk.

Frankly, I think you should find it of interest that your son would think they are pretending to be you, if that indeed is how he is seeing this. Is that how he sees you and it hits home when people make fun of beer-drinking drunks? Maybe you should take that up with your son. Just ask him how he sees you when you drink. If he is not afraid to speak his mind about this to you he will tell you why it bothers him so much for people to pretend to be drunk. Not trying to offend but "Out of the mouths of babes..."

I suppose I should have called the bishop right after we moved to the new ward to tell him there's a Catholic in the family and preempt such talk.

I'm LDS, and my dad's side of the family is Catholic... my grandfather died of alcohol poisoning, so I'm not a big fan of beer. Frankly, I'd rather kids see it as the evil it is, then rationalize and justify reasons to make it seem ok.

http://www.reuters.c...E6A000O20101101

"The World Health Organization estimates that risks linked to alcohol cause 2.5 million deaths a year from heart and liver disease, road accidents, suicides and cancer -- accounting for 3.8 percent of all deaths. It is the third leading risk factor for premature death and disabilities worldwide."

That's great for a son to honor their father and stick up for him, but you have to admit, beer isn't the greatest thing to stand up in support of.

I don't mean to offend. Thank you for the opportunity to express my frustration. My son was sobbing. That's not supposed to be caused by anything or anyone at a church of all places. Have a good night and thanks for the replies.

Tis okay. Just try and work through it. Yes, talk to the Bishop... people probably shouldn't be making comments like such.

So instead of consoling your son you decided that the best thing to do was to post on a website and make generalizations about a whole religion? Well while we are at it Catholics do have a reputation for being ... Never mind Edited by Saints Alive
