Lightbearer Posted August 7, 2012 Posted August 7, 2012 I was just a baby thru toddler during the moon landings. I recall Skylab and everything after. The Viking landers were just as exciting as this.I was 10 years old when Apollo 11 landed at Tranquility base. I followed the entire Apollo program and actually saw Apollo 16 launch from across the state through a telescope. It was exciting and wonderful to watch men on the moon, it was fantastic and fueled the imagination, it was Apollo 13 that sobered up the country to how dangerous it all was. Thank God they (almost)all made it home safe. Unfortunately Apollo 1 had three brave men (Grissom, Chaffee, and White) who lost their lives on the launch pad. Yet by Apollo 12 people had mostly forgotten the danger of space travel. Luckly the space program had no more deaths until the Challenger explosion in the 1980's and also the reentry disaster of 2003. Actually that is a pretty good record for all the risks taken over the years. I also remember the Viking program of 1976. I thought it was interesting that they at first thought the sky color should have been a deep blue when they found it to be "pretty and pink" (salmon color to be exact) I am glad to see we are still active in the space program and hope they commit to manned exploration of Mars. Now that would be impressive. But in today's economy and social climate I doubt that ever happens.

When our moon was just a stepping stone to Mars then the greater universe. To boldly go where no man has gone before.I think the general populous has lost something intangible, but very real. We have lost the sense of wonder and awe from daring to do great deeds. We have devolved to where we know to cost of everything and the value of nothing.

aranyborju Posted August 7, 2012 Posted August 7, 2012 I wonder if tens of generations from now someone will complain about the writings of our day claiming there is no way a spacecraft could have lifted off with layers of gold, the plates would just be too heavy to lift!Probably not since they will be able to test it for themselves using the scientific method instead of relying on an apologist. Unless of course a wicked priest scratches out all of our science and just writes "God did it" in the margins.

Nicest people on the face of the earth.McNamara cancelled the program because he didn't trust the military. NASA was created after - and the Space Shuttle.

That's the first time they've done this with a Mars probe.Even better, Curiosity "tweeted" -- has its own Twitter feed: @MarsCuriosityActually, I am not sure if the probe does its own tweets, or NASA is its proxy, but...10:11 PM - 5 Aug 12 : Way to go, Odyssey!
