Were Any Of You Watching Fair Conference Streaming - Dan Peterson

Was That from Greg Kofford Books? Might want to alert the mods it looks like a scam. I got PM from him on this SMPT thing.

I am very confused- what are you saying? SMPT is a scam? Kofford Books is a scam? What are you saying?

It's not 10 o'clock here yet, and it was only announced late this pm.

In his FAIR Conference address Dan announced a new on-line journal, a replacement of sorts for the late, great FARMS Review.

AHA!

Thanks!

No, the Element publication doesn't have anything to do with us at Kofford Books, that's the realm of SMPT (Society of Mormon Philosophy and Theology), and It's not a scam either. The site is just down right now as far as I can tell.

Check the first couple of posts in this thread.

Scott finally posted that the interpreter = "the new journal that Dan discussed at the conference". THAT is what was unclear at least to me. Too many thises and thatsis for my weird brain!

Posted

Dan said it would not be exclusively apologetics. FARMS Review wasn't either, for that matter.

Is JBMORS continuing unaltered under Bradford's new regime? I haven't heard.

If not, the new journal may be filling both niches.

What is also confusing is that the interpreter sounds like it will be exclusively scriptural articles, not apologetics.

Isn't Bokovoy's article more the type for JBMORS, rather than the Review? Is this trying to replace the review, or JBMORS? I guess I'm confused at what niche this is supposed to fall into, having missed Peterson's Big Speech.

In the early years of FARMS, the Journal of Book of Mormon Studies focused on research similar to my article. By design, however, it has morphed into a less technical periodical intended to reach a broader audience. The Review attempted to fill this void by publishing independent academic research in addition to reviews.

As I understand it, this new journal will publish some reviews on books that come out on LDS scripture, but it is also very much an effort to get back to the type of Mormon studies that the Journal of Book of Mormon Studies was putting out in the early years under the editorship of Stephen Ricks and John Sorenson.

Never been impressed with David Bokovoy, and nothing has changed; but I hope that at the very least they will prove their worth by publishing the Dehlin article everybody else wants to read! :)

Do you have to try to be obnoxious or does it just happen naturally?

Wait- I think I know the answer.

Zerinus has been ejected from the thread. -Ares

Just finished reading your article and, as usual, it has inspired me to look deeper into some of my own research including the concept of astral ascent among shamanistic cultures. Could Nephi and Lehi been considered a form of shaman and, if so, what would it say about all the other ecstatic prophets?

Did you present this idea in a former FAIR Conference? I remember a person speaking about shamans and the possible connections to Lehi and Nephi's teachings.

Before today I would have never recognized the name "David Bokovoy". However, having read through a good portion of “Thou Knowest That I Believe: Invoking The Spirit of the Lord as Council Witness in 1 Nephi 11”, I am deeply impressed. It's obvious that Bill Hamblin was his professor as Bokovoy's presentation ofthe Divine Council would make Bill proud.

During the Q&A session, Dan Peterson said specifically that Greg Smith's article was NOT likely to be published in The Interpreter. The article is fully under control of Greg Smith at this point, and he will not publish it in any venue at all until he can determine what the Church's position on it would be. This was noted by Dan during the Q&A, and has also been confirmed by Greg Smith directly to me.

The Interpreter will have substantial worth regardless. It will not be entirely apologetic in content, but will include apologetic articles of the type that used to appear in the FARMS Review. It will include some articles that were originally slated for publication in the lost second issue of the Mormon Studies Review.

Gotcha... so it's the Fundamentalist Journal of Book of Mormon Studies ;) Ha!

Enjoyed your paper, by the way. Served as an interesting compliment to Don Bradley's wonderful FAIR presentation.

SMPT site is down. Give it till monday. Meantime, see http://timesandseaso...lecture-update/,

See you there, Bukowski.

Hey thanks! That's what I was looking for.

I certainly hope I can get there, but I have some other issues at the moment which may get in the way.

In the meantime, do you know Benjamin Huff? He is still not responding to my emails.

I really can't figure out who is who anymore.

Contrary to popular opinion the church has never been just one political party or view. I disagree with Br. Bokovoy politically but I admire his scholarship. This is why we don't allow political threads here: members in good standing can become very hostile and negative toward each other.

Nope. I read every word.

As a church, are you saying we have no further need for education? "Uneducated" is a relative thing you know.

I see you are simply in a defensive mode. So I'll go ahead and move on as no dialogue will come between us. Sorry you took offense to my concerns. A lot of us who watched his anti-Conservative tirade a while back were shocked by his comments, which went far beyond just opinion. I did not realize he was so immortalized here.

Now how did that 13th Article of Faith go again....?

I agree. Which is why my concern existed in the first place. I do not believe insulting people who believe opposite of you conforms to the 13th Article of Faith.

Sorry I mentioned it. Again, a lot of people change sides on Pro-Mormon to Against-Mormon it becomes hard to follow. Again, sorry.

"Beyond opinion" to what?

For what it's worth, I also disagree strongly with his politics, but he has perfectly rational reasons for believing what he believes, and I used to have similar opinions to his, but my experiences with the world caused me to change those views. I was a revolutionary communist- and Bokovoy is no where near that.

Most of the philosophers I admire are left-wing, but I think they are mistaken. But their opinions are well-thought through and they have very good reasons for believing what they do. I am certainly not defending Bokovoy- I disagree with him in fact. He certainly doesn't need my defense or anyone else's

I don't think we have a need to have "concerns" for anyone who has strong opinions which they have thought through. God teaches us all in different ways and we all have different experiences in life.

I really don't think we as church members need to worry about differences of opinion in the church- I think they are a healthy thing. That is one of our unique qualities- and I agree with Ostler on that one. Orthopraxis not dogma.

In fact that is what allows us to each develop our own testimonies of every principle. Without disagreement there can be no progression at least not in this life. We are need to find our own way.

I hope this means we will finally get to read Schryver's scroll length article.

I don't want to make this thread about me. But I will state that these are not true statements.

We will agree to disagree. I feel you are downplaying your comments, especially on Facebook. A friend of mine was blocked by you for standing up to some of your very insulting assertions about conservative LDS and education. Good luck on your endever though.

I feel very honored and humbled by the fact that my article on 1 Nephi 11 appears as the initial publication in the new academic journal edited by my friend and former professor Daniel Peterson, a man for whom I hold tremendous respect, both as a person and as a scholar. It's only appropriate, in a sense, since the issues that I address involve matters connected with celestial ascents, a topic I was first exposed to many years ago as an undergraduate in my favorite BYU course: a class on celestial ascents in religious literature taught by Dan, and William Hamblin.

As I understand it, new articles will appear weekly until each volume of the journal is completed. It's a brilliant format and Bryce Haymond has done an amazing job in bringing the whole thing together.

Congratulations David, as the inaugural author in what I'm confident will quickly become the premier journal in the field. I read the article late last night and enjoyed it very much. Very impressive. I look forward to more in the future.

Again, let's not make this about me. If I offended you and/or your "friend" then I do apologize.

Thank you, Will. That means a lot. I have no doubt that the editors would love to receive an article from you on the KEP, and I for one hope that your work will appear in print via this and other venues. I'm glad we're friends again.
