Temple In Rome

For me it was interesting to visit both Salt Lake City and Rome in recent years. When it comes to architecture and town planning SLC aren't in the same league. I was very impressed with Rome, much less so with SLC. No building in Rome is allowed to be built taller than St Peters' bassilica. It's the same in places like York and Canterbury where the cathedrals are the centre piece of the city. The Salt Lake temple has an office block next door which dwarfs it. Really poor planning. And worse still, the office block belongs to the church. What were they thinking of!

I know this is another topic and has probably been done to death on here; but I cannot imagine the authorities in Rome, nor the Catholic church permitting, let alone funding, the construction of a shopping mall within metres of the Vatican.

In the end it come down to class. Rome has it in bucket loads, SLC wouldn't know it if it bit them on the bum!

In order to answer that question, we'd have to know how hot they were.

This is supposed to be an official LDS video, but I didn't think the Rome Temple was finished (or expected to be until 2014.)

Is this an official Church video?

This is an official video. The best estimate I have heard is that the temple will be finished in August 2013.

And is the Temple in Rome finished (or is this just what it will look like when it is)?

The temple is not yet finished. Here is what it looks like today (23 guigno 2012).

Having now reviewed the video, I must cinfess to being a little disappointed with the architecture of the Rome temple. I feel there is such a rich architectural heritage associated with Rome that much more could have been done to reflect that in the design. Quite honestly, the Rome temple would not look out of place in any other location. The church has missed a trick here.

Mind you, I don't have a lot of confidence in the church's design people; two words ..... Provo Temple.

At the completion of either the Payson Temple or Provo City Center Temple, the Provo Temple will be closed for two years for complete retrofitting for earthquakes. I don't know whether they will also redesign it as they did to its twin in Ogden. People used to joke that both of them looked like Marriott Hot Shoppes. Mormons tend to be very practical people, not connoisseurs of the fine arts.

Some cities have strict building codes, such as Jerusalem. Building materials and design there are kept within very archaic bounds so as not to alter the character of the city.

I had a bad view of the Provo and Ogden temples' appearance as well. Until I learned more about their symbolism. They are more simple and subtle in their symbolism than other religious buildings. I actually love the design now.

Some very simple examples are the pillar of flame and the cloud, as with Moses and the Exodus... A candle not hidden... If the main portion represents heaven, then the pillar would represent the light of truth... I will have to see if I can find the paper that discussed the symbolism in more detail
