When did Romney say stay at home moms don't work?

Romney made a blanket statement, therefore his blanket statement is left open for blanket interpretations. It would be helpful to use a more complete quote of Romney in which he references not having preschool age children at home. On a different note:

"Romney, himself, has said the “all moms are working moms” argument does not apply to mothers who accept welfare assistance.

“Even if you have a child two years of age, you need to go to work,” Romney

," From comment it is clear that Romney is referring to work outside of the home for pay from which one pays taxes and contributes in a direct way to the National economy.

As I have read "stay at home mom" does not qualify for the current "work requirement" for government assistance. Also, as I understand the events Romney first made a blanketstatement which included stay at home welfare moms, he then was later forced to say something along the lines that "all moms are working moms." Romney made a terrible statement that was an insult to thousands if not millions of women, and then had to backtrack on it so as not to insult his wife nor to alienate his "base" i.e. conservatives who likely are stay at home moms. (In terms of welfare and being LDS, just about every new infant in my ward is on a form of Government welfare)

Currently there is a "plan" to include "stay at home mom" in the "work requirement" for government assistance, at least for the first 3 years of a childs life. If Romney truely believes now that all moms are working moms, then Romney would be wise to support such a measure, even though it is being put forth by a Democrat.

No way he meant anything like you imply, i.e. that he didn't value her work or non working mothers. I read what he said to mean that there are individuals and families that stay on state welfare for years, generation by generation. It is reasonable to expect that children growing up in such an environment would have a more "entitlement" perspective. I personally knew two such families when I was young.

The Church welfare helped my divorced mom for a number of months, helping her find a good job. Then she was expected to stand on her own two feet and work... and to expect help only in an emergency situation.

As much as I value your views spiritually, I believe you are wrong to project your interpretation on something he said that I'm sure he didn't mean as you posit.

The average stay on welfare at the time was 2 years with the bulk of those who stayed longer being the Developmentally Disabled children. Now the longest can stay on welfare is 2 years at one time with a maximum benefit of 5 years.

For those having a difficult time with simple semantics, as posted multiple times by TSS, Romney wrote in his book No Apology (what was full of distortions and inaccuracies)

"Welfare without work erodes the spirit and the sense of self-worth of the recipient. And it conditions the children of nonworking parents to an indolent and unproductive life."

When Romney uses the term, "welfare without work," he does not qualify it. Within that set of nonworking welfare recipients fall the moms who receive welfare. Are they working or aren't they? If they are not working in the marketplace, according to Romney, they are receiving welfare without work, even though they may be raising children, ergo, SAHMs who receive welfare don't work.

Just like Rosen, Romney could have stated it better. But he'll never own it, nor will he ever apologize.

Glad to see Ann stand up for pro-choice. Wonder how long that will last.

Rosen got crucified because she played the class warfare card and tried to imply that a stay-at-home-mom is singularly unqualified to relate to the issues of women at large.

The Left- and Rosen is a paid consultant for the Democrat party- is terrified of Ann Romney. They've worked very hard to create a portrait of Mitt Romney as cold, distant, uncaring, and out-of-touch.

Many of the Leftists here (yourself included) have tried to perpetuate that narrative.

Ann Romney, by contrast, is warm, caring, compassionate, and highly intelligent- and she doesn't fit the Left/MSM's narrative of how women are supposed to look, think, or act.

She has the potential to show the 'human" side of her husband, to smoothe his rought edges, and to draw women into the Romney camp.

As such, Ann Romney is a threat to the Obama reelection campaign and must be destroyed or discredited.

Rosen fired the first official salvo in that attempt, and is now playing the victim because it blew up in her face.

Obama has never had to face the painful decision about whether to abort his unborn child or place her up for adoption.

If the lack of a real-world job disqualifies Ann Romney from speaking to women's issues, then Obama is singularly unqualified to speak to women, employers, construction workers, doctors, businessmen, or pretty much any body else who isn't a race-baiter or academic insulated from the real world.

The attack on Ann Romney was inane, offensive, and politically motivated.

Hi TSS... I said I knew the families who stayed on welfare for years when I was young... well before 1995 reforms. It's not just Romney with the concept of continuing welfare eroding the spirit and motivation... numerous socialogists have stated that concept... in fact what is the scripture... paraphrasing... if you give a man a fish etc, but if you teach a man to fish... I can't remember just how it goes, but you get the idea.

I walked down to the beach for the first time in several weeks... the sky was so blue, the air fresh, the sound of the gulls so welcome after a long, wet winter and early spring. The trees are leafing out and in a couple weeks this area will be emerald.

Which was precisely the response of Jon Stewart and his audience, i.e. lol. For all the flak he gets for changing positions, I can only hope that if Romney is elected that he will return to the moderate policies he espoused as governor.
