Duncan Posted February 10, 2012 Posted February 10, 2012 Our ward just got a new Bishop and I think he must a disciple of Stephen Coveyism as he is "killing us" on the ward council (not my words) having to do all these mission plans, vision type stuff. I handed mine in some weeks ago and he called me to redo it. In my angst I was thinking of a title for my new one. I am the WML. So I titled it "Invite all to Come unto Christ" but it got me to thinking is there a when to this idea? When or possibly how do you know you have come unto Christ? I know that we can easily get baptized, get confirmed, go through the Temple and do all that but yet not know a thing about Jesus or become something in the process. So, what do you think?
Storm Rider Posted February 10, 2012 Posted February 10, 2012 There is a beginning to coming unto Christ, but it is not an event or an experience. Coming unto Christ is a journey or process where one is aligning themselves to emulating their thoughts and actions those of the Savior. It is a never ending process in mortality. We stop coming when we stop repenting or cease our efforts to become as he is. I actually think this is more about how we live the true, pure gospel of Christ. It is not directly related to actions so much as where our heart is. Righteous actions can only be righteous when they are the result of a righteous heart. Too often disciples think they are doing well when they keep commandments, attend meetings, fulfill callings all the while their hearts are in a different place, chaffing at their perceived need to "do" things, without love or charity motivating their choices. This is my two mites. The higher law of Jesus is focused on the heart of humanity and not on keeping 900 commandments, which was the old law.
The Nehor Posted February 10, 2012 Posted February 10, 2012 You know when he embraces you in the arms of his love (both figuratively and eventually literally).For the Ward Mission Report/Vision Statement/Motivational Drivel no one will read report here is what I would do:I would title it: "Doing the Lord's Work Covey's Way; with Examples from the Book of Mormon"Then in the body of the report cite scriptures regarding all the great missionaries in the Book of Mormon and Bible and how none of them took time to write up vision statements or mission plans. Or if they did, the compilers of the Book of Mormon thought the point so trivial they didn't see fit to mention it. Make special note of Nephi's mission plan to get the plates and how he definitely visualized how to gain success before going into the streets that night he found Laban.Either you get out of writing the stupid thing or you get released. To use a Coverite phrase: Win/WinBut then I am a rebellious jerk so take my advice with at least a grain (preferably a shaker) of salt. 2

As to the Bishop's request, I would have one of FT missionaries give you their goal sheet and then just copy your goals from that. If he wants more, tell him that "If it's good enough for the Lord's servants, it must be good enough for me." (or as an alternate, let him tell you what he wants and put his numbers in and then just do it your way) MW

But seriously, I think this bishop needs some compassion here (do you want to trade jobs?), or some direct and humble communication to him (after praying about it) regarding your misgivings about the project; and, heh, is it possible you could actually learn something from what he is trying to teach you?For the record, who says there weren't mission statements in the Book of Mormon ? Mosiah 28:2-3Find a good general conference talk on Coming Unto Christ and use the advice in it as a springboard to create a mission statement and a program for that.
