Here’s some more that I thought of (in no particular order):

We really have a lot of them - maybe somebody should publish a Mormon dictionary for new converts!

Liahona

The Iron Rod

Tree of Life

Tree of knowledge of good and evil

Garden of Eden (not exclusively a Mormon phrase – but frequently used)

Great and Spacious building

Prophet, seer, and revelator

Straight and narrow path

Food Storage

Deseret

Baptism for the Dead

Change of heart

Ward

Stake

Sealing

Families are forever!

Family History

“The veil was very thin that day”

Three Degrees of Glory

Washing and anointing (initiatory)

The Great Apostasy

Returned Missionary

Zion

Babylon

Beehive

Endowment

Hosanna Shout

Patriarchal Blessing

Pioneer Trek

Gadianton Robbers

Urim and Thummim

Golden Plates

“Another testament of Jesus Christ”

The term Holy Spirit is used in the Book of Mormon, too. If there are two possible terms we can use, why not use the one that makes us sound less weird?

Exactly. I agree 100%. Not sure what is so complicated about that to people. The term "wot ye not" is also scriptural. Should I start saying that instead of "Do you understand" ?

I prefer the definition of "gospel" that is attributed to Jesus in the Book of Mormon: "[T]his is my gospel which I have given unto you--that I came into the world to do the will of my Father, because my Father sent me" 3 Nephi 27:13. Another good Mormon definition of "gospel" is D&C 76:40-42: "And this is the gospel, the glad tidings, which the voice out of the heavens bore record unto us--that he came into the world, even Jesus, to be crucified for the world, and to bear the sins of the world, and to sanctify the world, and to cleanse it from all unrighteousness; that through him all might be saved whom the Father had put into his power and made by him."

Or the plan of happiness, in other words.

That Jesus came to save us is the "good news." What we do in response to the good news is, in my view, not the gospel itself. The article of faith says that the gospel is associated with "principles and ordinances," but I don't think those principles and ordinances are, themselves, the "good news."

I don't think so either. I think the plan of happiness is excellent news.

The gospel, to me, is the work and the glory of God, to bring to pass man's immortality and eternal life; i.e., happiness. That sums up everything for me.

Sorry, "wot ye not" is not "do you understand", it's "did you not know".

Thanks for making the point even clearer. :)

EDIT: Wouldn't it be "Do you not know" and not "did you not know?" "Wot" is not the preterit, but the present tense. Anyway, the point is made the same anyway--just because something is "scriptural" doesn't mean it's the preferable choice for conveying meaning.

"Fry sauce."

I know it's a Utah (not just LDS) thing, but I jokingly asked a cashier at a fast food restaurant in California if they had any fry sauce when I was there last weekend. The look they gave me was priceless.

Like the look I'm giving you now? What the bleeding heck is "fry sauce"?

Edited to add: Nevermind. Calmoriah filled me in already. Sounds disgusting. Although here in Olympia Washington we have a local indy fast food outlet called "Big Tom's" that offers something vaguely similar that is called "Goop". I say vague similar because it is based more on mustard than ketchup I think. They won't tell me what goes in it when I ask.

At this point, I wish someone would share what exactly IS in fry sauce.....I have heard of it before; but have never had it. Does anyone have a recipe???

Thanks!!

Combining Miracle Whip or Mayonaise with Ketchup. Usually equal amounts. Once mixed, you dip fries or tater tots in it and you've made fry sauce.

A better receipe is almost equal parts Ranch Dressing and Ketchup. Mix and dip.

Bah! This is what you should be dipping your food in... don't cheat yourself on the Brown sugar or Molasses. I used about 150% of the amounts below in my last sweet batch. If you want it hot substitute chipotle powder for the mild chile powder.

Daddy G’s Sweet BBQ Sauce

  • 2 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 2 cup ketchup
  • 1cup chili sauce
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped onion
  • 8 tablespoons minced garlic
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons liquid smoke
  • ¼ cup molasses
  • 8 tablespoons prepared mustard
  • ¼ cup yellow mustard
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 4 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoon paprika
  • 2 tablespoon mild chili powder
  • 2 tablespoon cinnamon
  • 2 teaspoons dried oregano
  • 2 teaspoons dried thyme
  • 2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 teaspoon cayenne
  • 2 teaspoon celery seed
  • 2 teaspoon powdered cloves
  • 2 teaspoon whatever you think sounds good at the time
  • Corn starch to thicken (optional - and for petes sake mix it with cold water first)

That recipe is secret (not sacred) by the way. Don't go posting it on a public discussion board or anything like that. If you do sell it commercially send me 5% gross in royalties and we'll call it even.

IOW, open your cabinets and your refrigerator and throw anything handy into it.

We have a winner! That second to last ingredient is important. If you do it right you will be tempted to eat your finger when you use it to test the sauce.

Proper BBQ is based on the rub, not the sauce. 5% won't net you very much.

My wife reads bios of any dead church guy you can name so she tends to speak with the same syntax as men who have been dead for at least 50 years.

Why do we call each other brother all the time? I never referred to my sibs as "Brother" or "Sister". Why do I have to do It at Church? I don't "rub shoulders" with anyone nor do I know how.

Gotta be mayonnaise. It's nasty with Miracle Whip. Ack!

As I said above its better with Ranch and Ketchup.

You can substitute thousand island dressing for ketchup also....

Thousand Island is mainly ketchup and mayo. So substituting thousand Island would just make it fry sauce with a higher concentration of mayo.

I really like Ranch. And I even occasionally eat it on hamburgers and hot dogs.

I'll have to try this.

Have you ever just used ranch to dip your fries in?
