KevinG Posted September 13, 2011 Posted September 13, 2011 1:20am - time to go to bed before I end up all
Garden Girl Posted September 13, 2011 Posted September 13, 2011 Insomnia is not fun... as I've grown older, I've had more difficulty sleeping. I stay up to all hours and usually average about 4 hours of sleep. Sometimes I'll nap in my big chair during the evening, then go to bed. Good thing I'm retired as I can take a nap during the day if I want.I've read that if you can't sleep, rather than toss and turn the best thing is to get up and go read or something quiet like music vs watching TV so as not to stimulate the mind/senses any more. Then try again to sleep.GG
Bond...James Bond Posted September 13, 2011 Posted September 13, 2011 1:20 isn't insomnia. 5:30 is insomnia.
Calm Posted September 13, 2011 Posted September 13, 2011 It is very hard to hav insomnia when one is required to wake up and function the next day. I have been very lucky with my husband being willing and able to do morning duty to allow me what sometimes amounts to the only few hours of sleep I get. Now that the kids are grown, the guilt of not being there for my family at times is much less, but I can't hold a job or even attend school or church often. People just do not understand the long term effects of sleep deprivation and even willingly cause it (a few nasties include obesity, heart attacks, memory loss, depression). I pity anyone who has to make the kind of choices that come with chronic insomnia (do I drive the car knowing I may fall asleep at the wheel or do I lose my job?). If you suffer regularly from insomnia, do not put off dealing with it. It is too easy for it to become chronic and that will be life altering. Trust me, it's worth almost any effort if you have the chance to change....and be careful assuming the first diagnosis is right as misdiagnosis can end up making things worse (medication given to me accelerated the course of my disorder requiring use of drugs now with side effects that add to my disabilities even if they make life endurable. It may be a bit outdated, but a great intro is the book The Promise of Sleep by Dement.

One time of the day that being passive is a good thing.

When I teach a lot of calculations in class, if I do sleep I am doing them all night in dreams.I used to wait to do my calculus homework right before I went to bed because that way I would do problems all night in my dreams. I swear it helped me get "A"s in my calculus classes!

Can't remember for sure, those psych classes were a long time ago, lol.

But today for instance I didn't sleep at all and have now been up for what 27 hrs or something. Probably won't go to sleep til 11 pm my time.

Calm Posted September 13, 2011 Posted September 13, 2011 (edited) I wrote 5 pages on my thesis so I was pretty productive. My house can get gorgeous after a day or two of nonsleep. Less sleep generally means less sitting down. Quality of thought depends on how much sleep I got before the nonsleep phase. I do get very, very talkative. Edited September 13, 2011 by calmoriah
Garden Girl Posted September 13, 2011 Posted September 13, 2011 I pity anyone who has to make the kind of choices that come with chronic insomnia (do I drive the car knowing I may fall asleep at the wheel or do I lose my job?). Falling asleep at the wheel was the main reason I had to give up serving as a temple worker in the Portland OR temple (after six years)... I could never be sure when it would happen as sometimes I was able to make the trip okay (2 1/2 hr drive one way). Temple days were 10 hour days... 2+ hours driving in, 1 hr prayer mtg, 5 hr shift, 2+ hr trip home. It was on the way home that I would have difficulty, in fact, several times I woke "just in time" to find myself over the center line on our two-lane highways, pulling back into my lane just seconds before meeting oncoming traffic or going off the road into trees, etc. (I believe angels woke me). I tried various things but sometimes even they did not help. So I made the choice to resign vs killing myself or, worse, someone else. Now if I want to go to the temple I take someone with me, and that works well.GG

I wish I could be a big cleaner, I'd have the house cleaned every night around 3 a.m.
Calm Posted September 13, 2011 Posted September 13, 2011 (edited) I'd have the house cleaned every night around 3 a.m.Ah, it used to be that way for me but alas, after decades of not sleeping other issues have developed which leave me without the energy, so instead I just clean up the Internet. Give me a good dose of nonsleep though and miracles can still happen. Edited September 13, 2011 by calmoriah

Can't remember for sure, those psych classes were a long time ago, lol.I don't think it works or else I would have remembered everything I did in college. I was in a constant state of going to sleep. Before class, in class...
