I would be careful. This lady might be nice, but she sounds unstable. I don't believe in ghosts or spirits, but ask yourself this question: If your deceased father actaully wanted to tell you something why wouldn't he just appear and tell you himself rather than speaking to some random co-worker of your wife's and throwing coded letters? It sounds like you already know this is BS. However, be careful that this lady isn't some crazy stalker, or has an alterior motive. I would even have your wife get some advice from her HR department and find out how to handle a coworker who is doing a bunch of creepy stuff concerning deceased relatives.

It is interesting to me that aside from Mormons on this board, no other Mormons who are personally involved or aware of this situation have any doubts or concerns. More interesting is that I have now been labeled to some degree or another as faithless by those Mormons personally involved. I have received emails accusing me of being an intellectual who has allowed the learning of men to prevent me from believing in this amazing experience. Apparently, I am near apostasy and am receiving pleading letters by two women (one of them has a grandmother who visits the ghost whisperer), to return to the faith.

Weird right? I guess I was just surprised at the reaction I'm getting. Apparently two Stake Presidents have given their stamp of approval on the events. (I received text messages from third parties who started off by saying something like, "I just spoke with my Stake President and he totally believes in Spirits talking to mortals and He told me it's in the scriptures too....) Somehow I doubt they are aware of the exact nature of these angelic ministrations.

That's weird. Where I live I'm pretty sure that the Mormons here would pretty much all be suspicious. It is definitly weird if people think that this situation is scripturally supported. I can't think of any time in the scriptures where someone is visited by a spirit to give a message meant for someone else. The scriptures also only support visitations by spirits that are sent with important messages. The scriptures also say that the devil can appear as an angel of light. My guess is that she is either mentally unstable or trying to mess with you. You could ask her if she's tried shaking the spirit's hand and see what her response is (it's worth a shot).

I assure you many who are not "internet Mormons" would think this hokus pokus. I'd probably edge on being an incredibly conservative and oft literalist when it comes to the gospel and I would say faith has nothing to do with this, and know several who would feel the same. As far as someone saying such and such stake president believes in spirits -- great -- that doesn't make her's true. It's not all or nothing.

I would refer these people to the scripture about God not being the author of confusion and that this supposed spirit is sending confusing and vague messages that mean nothing to you. Just because this woman is Mormon doesn't mean what she is telling you is true. We had a lady in my old ward who had "revelations" for people. She tried telling this woman she wasn't supposed to go to the temple - she was supposed to wait for her husband to get his act together and go with her. This was something she had prayed about for a long time and she felt it was time to go to the temple. She yelled at the lady to back off when she intruded in that way.

Show them this guy. He just throws stuff out until something sticks and when it doesn't quite stick, he shifts the focus to something else.

I would also add that there may be a bit of a bias in those who think this is normal. Those who are in left-field as-is are more likely to opine, rather than others who may not want to say anything because people get offended if you suggest they're nuts or full of it.
