I have noticed recently that Elder Boyd K Packer (the president of the council of the Twelve) has become the new punching bag for the critics (LDS) on this board. He seems to have replaced Elder McConkie and President Joseph Fielding Smith as the most vilified and hated of the modern apostles. I am frankly shocked at the disrespect and open hostility exhibited by some "LDS" board members. Since he is the President of the Council of the Twelve, it is within the realm of possibility that he could one day become the President of the Church if President Monson passes away before he does. So I was curious to see how the vote would go with some here.

If President Packer ever becomes the President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints I will sustain him with joy, faith, and sincerity. He will be my prophet, seer, and revelator. I would be honored to be a member of the Church he would lead in the name of Jesus Christ.

...the most vilified and hated of the modern apostles.

...

I've heard it said that the elevation of an apostle to the

First Presidency is generally a mellowing and humbling event.

Whatever criticisms were directed against Apostle Packer in the past,

he would probably cease to be a magnet for hostility after his

ordination as Prophet.

At least that's what I suppose is most likely.

Should he come into the office with a sweeping agenda of

reform, change, punishment, retrenchment, or some other set

of controversial developments, then perhaps problems would arise.

The criticism of him is nothing but politically motivated and inspired by The Adversary.

Not only would I approve of him becoming our next Prophet; I pray that he does become our next Prophet and President of the Church. :P

He had it coming for a long time, bro. His SSM remarks seem to have sparked this new wave and I find the whole issue quite amusing.

The Pink Lobby obviously has singled him out because, unlike the Southern Baptists, EV's, and other large denominations & their leaders that have made even more vicious and inflammatory comments on gays- we're seen as a minority and easy to pick on because of that and because we actually practice the teachings of Jesus Christ- though I'm not one to turn the other cheek.

In other words, they think we are easy to bully and push around, unlike the other, more larger churches here.

Yet if the Homosexual movement actually thinks that the pressure they put on our church will do the same thing that happened to the mainstream Protestant Churches, then they're wasting their time.

-After all, we do have a backbone and are quite familiar with outside pressure and persecution.

Call me crazy, but I haven't seen BKP being a significant figure of attack in the SSMlike movement. The OP is talking about LDS members and critics that focus on BKP because of other reasons, too, besides SSM.

hahaha!

mmm, I don't think how big a church is really matters, bro.

I'm sure social pressure didn't have anything to do with lifting the Priesthood ban and the stop of polygamy.... yea..... the Church will be as immovable in its position as in other times...

Before Ezra Taft Benson became the Prophet, I heard dire predictions of a mass exodus from the Church if he ever became the Prophet; didn't happen.

Before Joseph Fielding Smith became the Prophet, I heard dire predictions of a mass exodus from the Church if he ever became the Prophet; didn't happen.

Before Spencer W. Kimball received the revelation about the priesthood , I heard dire predictions of a mass exodus from the Church if it eve happened; didn't happen.

There will not be massive exodus and he will easily be sustained among the membership.

As a nonmember, there's only 3 individuals who regularly talk at GC where it's best that I leave the room. BKP is on top of that list but who really cares what critics think.

I've always enjoyed President Hinckley's and President Monson's talks. I don't expect that to be the case with President Packer.

I would have a much easier time accepting President Packer than accepting some kind of "revelation" that normalizes homosexual relationships.

as you should.... :P

I will sustain him. I fail to really get how a prophet could ruin my day, or how I could allow a prophet ruin my day. Life is too short and the Lord is too strong.

Posted

Fully and heartily sustain as I do right now. Haters will hate no matter what. It is the nature of evil.

Packer's talk in conference was not specifically about homosexuality. It was about all sin. You don't see the kleptomaniacs league freaking out. Many people wish that Packer would have said that the atonement of Christ can help you overcome all things with the exception of one glaring thing. Not going to happen.

Posted

Would sustain him, fully and completely, but that goes without saying. Sadly though, I don't know if we will have him too much longer, his age seems to have really caught up with him. :-(

The prophet is the prophet. If we choose to reject God's choice, that is our agency. There have been many other prophets and apostles in the world who have held positions of leaderhsip that others thought beyond them. The threat of a mass exodus means nothing to either the Lord, or His servants.

We need to remember who these men represent, not what we think they should do.

The Church's authorities have the right to pick whoever they want to lead the Church, and if Elder Packer were to become the next President, I'd be perfectly happy going along with the program. I expressed this sentiment in the funeral thread. I appreciate that Elder Packer says what he thinks. I understand the leaderships' need to have good PR, but it'd be refreshing to have somebody lead the Church who was just a bit less worried about PR.

For dinner? Surely I would accept him

AS a prophet of God? Ummmmmmmmmm, no!

Peace and HAppy Thanksgiving to ALL! :P

I am sure that it is unintentional, but aren't you then also praying that he outlives President Monson?

I don't care who's the prophet, as long as it's not me.

In reviewing BKP's statements over the years, it's strange to see BKP's name in the same sentence as PR... :P

That's why it would be interesting to observe those skills in action even if it would only be for a short time IMHO. The Prophet is suppose to be the prophet of the world and not just for the membership. It would be interesting to observe.

I don't think that it's something we are going to need to be concerned about for some time. Monson, while not as young and spry as he has been in the past, is still in pretty good health. I personally wouldn't be surpised if Monson outlives Packer.

If Elder Packer accepted the Second Book of Commandments, and the "year of cleansing" began, I would most likely sustain him.

Wouldn't it be great. He has always been one of my favorites.
