Jesus is one in essence with the Father, but separate in person. He didn't have to do anything. He ascended because that's where he wanted be.

If Jesus is not The Father, and you claimed that heaven is were God is. And if Jesus didn't ascend unto "your God and my God and your Father and my Father" who is in hevean, then how can you claim that the thief went to hevean when Paradise and Hevean do not seem to be the same places since the Father was not in paradise as Jesus had not yet ascended unto his Father.

I cannot say what the thief's final judgment was, but the statement from Jesus to the thief did not promise the fullness of God's blessings, only that he would be with Jesus in Paradise that day.

We know that several days later, Jesus had not yet ascended to His Father. We also know that Jesus preached to spirits in prison(1 Peter 3:19). The theif, more than likely, was preached the gospel in Paradise, but nothing is recorded from there. Jesus offered the thief an opportunity. The record is silent on the outcome.

What is Spirit Prison and why do no protestant denominations never seem to teach about it? (Catholics teach something like the LDS do)

I read in Helaman 15 today how God hated the Lamanites "because their deeds have been evil continually, and this because of the iniquity of the tradition of their fathers. But behold, salvation hath come unto them through the preaching of the Nephites; and for this intent hath the Lord prolonged their days." It seems the term "hate" here is used more to express His inability to reach them individually on an intimately spiritual level because they are not prepared, they cannot stand it, etc. However, He loves hem so much that He has arranged a way for them to achieve a level of spiritual awareness through the preaching of the Nephites. He hates it when they reject the conscience and the still, small voice, because he cannot reach them Himself. He hates what they have done to themselves, what they ahve become, what has been done to them--He hates this version / perversion of the perfect children He created. But He loves them so much that He will provide another means of conveying His message. Jesus did the same thing in the spirit world when He "went not in person among the wicked and the disobedient who had rejected the truth, to teach them," but "from among the righteous, he organized his forces and appointed messengers, clothed with power and authority, and commissioned them to go forth and carry the light of the gospel to them that were in darkness, even to all the spirits of men; and thus was the gospel preached to the dead(138:29-30)."

In other words, He loves our true selves, and who we really are. Our true selves are the children He created, and which Christ delivered unto perfection through His Atonement (we are all perfect in Christ if we choose Him). But He hates the lesser, altered forms we take take upon ourselves when we reject the light that was so plainly manifest in the beginning.
