  1. I'm into lesson 21 of the Religion 275 class manual. Page 101 - Remind students that prior to the Savior’s birth, Samuel the Lamanite foretold the signs that would accompany the Savior’s birth and death. Did Samuel ever give a sign of Christ's resurrection? 3 Nephi 8:3-5 says three days of darkness would be a sign of Christ's death. A link to 1 Nephi 19:10 is referenced. A great storm begins in the fourth day of the first month. The storm ends after three hours and then the three days of darkness begins (3 Nephi 8:19). "... according to the words of Zenos, which he spake concerning the three days of darkness, which should be a sign given of his death". Nephi in verse 20 says the darkness was on the face of the land. 1 Nephi 19:10 elaborates on the three days of darkness and mentions the isles of the sea. What other lands did the three days of darkness impact? Did the Nephites believe Jesus died on the fourth day or on the seventh day of the first month?
  2. I'm into lesson 20 of the Religion 275 class manual. Page 98 - Ask a student to read 2 Nephi 25:28–29 aloud, and explain that these verses summarize a powerful sermon Nephi gave to his people about how to be saved. Ask class members to look for what Nephi taught is the most important decision we will make in our lives. • What did Nephi teach is the most important decision we will make in our lives? (Help students identify the following principle: If we choose to believe in Jesus Christ and worship Him with all our might, mind, and strength, then we will remain spiritually strong and not be cast out.) 2 Nephi 25:29 says "And now behold, I say unto you that the right way is to believe in Christ, and deny him not; and Christ is the Holy One of Israel; wherefore ye must bow down before him, and worship him with all your might, mind, and strength, and your whole soul; and if ye do this ye shall in nowise be cast out". Are those "cast out" people a picture of those in Mosiah 16:5 who remained in their fallen state and were "as though there was no redemption made, being an enemy to God"? Does the part about worshipping Christ "with all your might, mind, and strength, and your whole soul" apply only to the mortal probation period or does it also extend to the spirit world where the wicked are?
  3. Maybe the father who already holds the Melchizedek Priesthood knows that it is best for him. In the end the child must decide for himself.
  4. If the church wants to do that, then there's nothing I can do about it. I believe parents should give young kids small responsibilities around the home and let them play and grow up and experience childhood.
  5. At current prices, a one ounce American Eagle gold coin is worth $1996.00 https://silvergoldbull.com/american-gold-eagles Earning 50 one ounce gold coins is really earning about $100,000 - unless the bank gave the boss a gold coin for only $50 and then the boss was foolish enough to pay it out to the employee for the face value.
  6. There is a comparison between "blessed" and "more blessed" in 3 Nephi 12. Jesus invited the Nephites to feel the nail prints in his hands and feet so that they would believe (3 Nephi 11:14–15). The next chapter records Jesus as saying "therefore blessed are ye if ye shall believe in me and be baptized, after that ye have seen me and know that I am". While I don't consider it a blessing for believing in Jesus after seeing him and touching him, in this context "more blessed" means more of a blessing is pronounced because it is based on faith, not on sight and touch.
  7. Governing over the population seems analogous to ruling over the population, no?
  8. I thought the war in heaven was because Heavenly Father rejected Satan's plan to save mankind. I didn't see anything about him wanting to be a king over its inhabitants.
  9. I'm into lesson 19 of the manual (Religion 275). https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/bc/content/shared/content/english/pdf/language-materials/12557_eng.pdf?lang=eng Page 89 - Remind students that before we came to earth, we participated in the Council in Heaven. “The central issue in that premortal council was: Shall the children of God have untrammeled agency to choose the course they should follow, whether good or evil, or shall they be coerced and forced to be obedient? “The scriptures make clear that there was a great war in heaven, a struggle over the principle of freedom, the right of choice” (Teachings: Ezra Taft Benson, 61). Was this the only war in heaven or were there smaller wars over issues discussed at other councils in heaven? Page 90 - Remind students that for centuries after Lehi arrived in the promised land, the Nephites were ruled by kings. Explain to students that the system of judges was appropriate and necessary to preserve freedom in Nephite society. From what I see in Mosiah 29, Mosiah is the last king before he decides to appoint judges to rule over them (verse 11). They would also have a dual rule - to judge them according to the law (verse 41) How does a good judge preserve freedom better than or equal to a good king? Would the United States have more or less freedom if the judges on the Supreme Court ruled over the people instead of elected Government officials?
  10. Since they could not understand what was written on the plates, they had to solely rely on what Joseph Smith said. This could have been done without them seeing or touching the plates - like they also had to believe the First Vision account since they were not present.
  11. Great. That works. Including @bluebell too.
  12. Thanks. I'll try that. Sometimes I find it difficult if one person's comment is on page 2 and I am replying to someone on page 6. When I initiate the reply to page 6 and go back to the person on page 2 for example and click on that one's quote button, it seems to loose my initial reply to the person on page 6. I might be doing something wrong.
  13. That's very helpful. How do you also include a quote made by one person when you are in the midst of replying to another person?
  14. What proxied ordinances, for the non-Israelites who lived under the Law of Moses, are not required?
  15. I'm into lesson 18 of the manual (Religion 275). Page 84 Introduction Mortal life is the time for us to prepare to meet God. Suggestions for Teaching Alma 34:32–34; 40:6–7, 11–14 After death, the righteous go to paradise and the wicked go to spirit prison What important doctrines about the purpose of life on earth did Amulek teach? (Students should identify several doctrines in this passage, including the following: This life is the time for us to prepare to meet God.) Since even the evil spirits that never entered mortality will meet God on Judgment Day, does this particular reference to mortal life mean proxied ordinances for the dead cannot prepare them to meet God in His kingdom; where its residents will have eternal life? Page 85 • What is the difference between the state of the righteous and the state of the wicked after death? (Although they may use different words, students should identify the following doctrine: Between death and resurrection, the spirits of the righteous dwell in paradise and the spirits of the wicked dwell in spirit prison.) Did the thief on the cross go to paradise with Jesus because his faith in Christ was counted for righteousness?
  16. Another conspiracy guy. You obviously don't consider that people can borrow from other forum posters and add additional comments to them by including them without being the same person.
  17. I don't see mercy extended to the tares in this church teaching. It is briefly talked about in points 8 and 9. Then another section starting with In Doctrine and Covenants 86, the Lord explains these additional details and gives more information on the first details has more about the tares.
  18. It doesn't explicitly say that. But in LDS theology, eternal life is living life as God and his wife lives - eternal increase. This is only possible in believing and acting on correct doctrine. Those in the telestial kingdom, that do not repent, are the goats. So while 'Jesus' told Joseph Smith not to join any of these groups back then, would he approve of people joining those groups in our day?
  19. The tares may appear to be members of the church to humans, but God knows they are not really members of His church. Judas was initially a member of the twelve, but he changed and lost his position. The parable of the wheat and the tares is about people in their state at the judgment. That's how I see it.
  20. According to JSH 1:5, the 3 main groups in Joseph's time where Methodist, Presbyterian, and Baptist. Verse 19 says "I was answered that I must join none of them, for they were all wrong; and the Personage who addressed me said that all their creeds were an abomination in his sight; that those professors were all corrupt; that: they draw near to me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me, they teach for doctrines the commandments of men, having a form of godliness, but they deny the power thereof". Forum user InCognitus provided a quote from Joseph Smith: According to Joseph Smith, the bad part about the creeds was that they were restrictive and drew lines that prevented a person from moving on to further truth. On October 15, 1843 he said: “I cannot believe in any of the creeds of the different denominations, because they all have some things in them I cannot subscribe to, though all of them have some truth. I want to come up into the presence of God, and learn all things; but the creeds set up stakes [limits], and say, ‘Hitherto shalt thou come, and no further’; which I cannot subscribe to.” (History, 1838–1856, volume E-1 [1 July 1843–30 April 1844]) The person who appeared to Joseph Smith in the first vision did not qualify the creeds as some parts are good while other parts are bad. As Joseph Smith was commanded not to join any of them, would this 'Jesus' also advise everyone else not to join these 3 churches and their sub-groups? Kind of believe it. But I don't view the tares as members in the body of Christ.
  21. The person speaking to Joseph in the first vision account said all their creeds are an abomination, not parts of all of them. I don't know anyone who follows one creed to the exclusion of anything else in the Bible. As for the sheep, they inherit eternal life. The goats are damned. That would mean the the church of the Lamb of God has a specific name. Since my church does not have that name, I would assume I am not a member in the church of the Lamb because we do not perform ordinances for the dead.
