Irony: The Good Old Days of Last Week- in LA

Recommended Posts

I was in the real estate business and sold some properties in Pacific Palisades and knew about what they worth- something that most folks in other states would not know.

But this info was for the good old days of last week.

6 Million was the MEDIAN price!

HMMMM....   how do you "go short" in real estate?   But of course you would have to also have a time machine....

So how will the market be NEXT MONTH?

I saw a house that survived apparently completely intact because of a steel roof and other fire resistant measures. The house next to it was practically level with the ground, iirc.

It was so odd seeing houses along the beach burnt out, especially when separated by a road.  Our friend, the fire chief, said the problem is the embers which can float for miles.

The fire resistant construction companies would make a good investment.  They will be busy, I am guessing.

How are insurance companies going to cover the losses though?

Many insurance companies cancelled the fire policies some time before the fires. Apparently , this affected thousands.

A few days out of date:

Approximately 1,000 Latter-day Saints have been evacuated and are staying with relatives, friends, fellow Church members or other lodging. More than 30 Latter-day Saints’ homes have been destroyed. Church buildings have been made available for community staging and shelter.

All missionaries are safe and accounted for and are continuing their service. The Los Angeles Temple, which closed on January 8, reopened on January 9 and is operating on its regular schedule.

Steve Smith says he received a questionnaire from his bishop, inquiring whether he and Janet had what they needed, items such as water, food, clothing, shelter and, if they didn’t, the congregation was there to help anyway it could. “The ward and [regional] stake want to make sure help of every kind is given. They’re doing a good job. On Sunday, I’m going to church for about a half-hour for a shortened meeting in my jeans.”

These two are also a couple of days old

Short answer: Don't know.  There are I think 3 ward buildings in Santa Monica- there is one ward building in Pacific Palisades - but I have not heard anything about that.  I suppose it would be easy to look up for members with abilities to use the church map system- but not knowing the exact areas destroyed would not tell us anything.

I have relatives in Santa Monica- but they are OK by a couple of miles.  My ward (30 miles away or so) is fine but we had a huge Stake based drive for the essentials- and everyone went to their DI bags and hampers and emptied them- our stake came up with about 4 SUV's full and one  large pickup truck full with stuff- and that went over there.  That came together in about 3 days and has already been distributed.

I know my Santa Monica relatives are ok-

That's about it from here.

Yes and in many locations the insurance companies saw it coming and STOPPED SELLING insurance and/or, in the "safest" areas raised the prices to prohibitive levels, even for rich folks.

Yes, that means that insurance was NOT AN OPTION in many locations.

From the above, it looks like no damage to church buildings, 48 members have lost their homes…I assume quite a few are families, so guessing around 20 homes lost.

Glad to hear they are sending in counselors to help with the emotional and mental adjustments.

And bravo for again offering our meetinghouses for others in need of worship space.  I am so glad we do this, especially in times of crisis when people need their communities.
