I had hoped their exodus from their former churches wasn't from faith, these splinter groups struggle so much, at times I think the "struggle" is maintaining their non-conformity. You want structure and order? You want solid doctrine that resists the tides? Surrender to organized religion. Link to comment
Devobah
Despite major differences, I've always thought that the Latter-Day Saint movement has more in common with Orthodoxy and Catholicism than they do differences. Though we will always differ on Trinity vs Godhead, the Papacy, and the Apostasy, we will agree that private interpretation of scripture is abound in the world of Protestantism. (Depending on who you ask, Catholics and Orthodox will call Latter-Day Saints protestants or apostates). When you have movements that can be started up willy nilly and your learning is based on how you were raised and under the interpretation of pastors and parents, the splinter continues. Protestants can claim "unity in the essentials" all the day long, or claim that "that isn't a salvation issue" but this brings up a few things: - If something is or isn't a salvation issue. (The nature of baptismal regeneration, the role of works in salvation, whether or not one is predestined to be saved, faith alone, etc.) - Who can interpret scripture the way that it is meant to be interpreted. - What is or isn't a heresy (infant baptism, the predestination of souls, baptismal regeneration, "works-based gospel", etc.) - Who has authority (priesthood of all believers or if there are only a select few who can carry out ordinances) - Along with many others. I've always held that if my faith was false, I would likely be Catholic or Orthodox. Protestantism just doesn't hold up to historical Christian doctrines (for anyone who studies the teachings of the early Christians), so that seems like a completely logical move and doesn't surprise me at all. But then, I would also say that if you really go back to the earliest teachings in Christianity (prior to the 3nd century AD), then Latter-day Saint doctrine is the only one (that I know of) that makes sense 2 Link to comment
