The Lord’s Scourges

Today Sister Gui pointed out this interesting connection between Israel and the Nephites, and the role played by their respective enemies, the Assyrians and the Lamanites in calling His people to repentance.

In Isaiah 10, the Lord reveals to Isaiah that He he will use the Assyrians as a tool to chasten the wayward Israelites.

Isaiah 10: 5 “Woe to the Assyrian, the rod of my anger,
    in whose hand is the club of my wrath!

6 I send him against a godless nation,
    I dispatch him against a people who anger me,
to seize loot and snatch plunder,
    and to trample them down like mud in the streets.

15 Does the ax raise itself above the person who swings it,
    or the saw boast against the one who uses it?
As if a rod were to wield the person who lifts it up,
    or a club brandish the one who is not wood!

 

In 2 Nephi the Lord says He will make the Lamanites His tool to scourge the Nephites when they stray.

2 Nephi 5: 25 And the Lord God said unto me: They shall be a scourge unto thy seed, to stir them up in remembrance of me; and inasmuch as they will not remember me, and hearken unto my words, they shall scourge them even unto destruction.

I recalled the Lord’s words in 3 Nephi (while invoking Isaiah) warning the Gentiles that the remnant of the Lehites will serve the same purpose if they do not repent.

11 Ye remember that I spake unto you, and said that when the words of Isaiah should be fulfilled—behold they are written, ye have them before you, therefore search them?…

15 And I say unto you, that if the Gentiles do not repent after the blessing which they shall receive, after they have scattered my people—
16 Then shall ye, who are a remnant of the house of Jacob, go forth among them; and ye shall be in the midst of them who shall be many; and ye shall be among them as a lion among the beasts of the forest, and as a young lion among the flocks of sheep, who, if he goeth through both treadeth down and teareth in pieces, and none can deliver.
17 Thy hand shall be lifted up upon thine adversaries, and all thine enemies shall be cut off.

Any obserservations?

I think the Native Americans would have killed a lot more of the earlier Gentiles if they had not repented to the extent they repented.  The Gentiles were never perfect and we/they still are not perfect but most tried to be more good than evil, I think. 

 

 

Apparently, the prophecy has yet to be fulfilled.

Did they stop because they repented or because they thought they had won?

Don't know!

Does true repentance require actual remorse? Yes. Was it sufficient for the government to avoid the scourge to simply stop attacking the church? Seems to be so. For one thing, only individuals can have remorse. Organizations, not being people, cannot.
