No idea but I suspect both these groups would be whiners if we faced a WWII type situation and had to endure similar conditions such as rationing. Conspiracies about rationing going to be made permanent. Protests because they couldn’t get enough sugar to make Aunt Tilda’s extra sugar and butter triple fudge brownies. Complaining that not being able to buy as much gasoline as they want amounts to communism. Because it all happened then too. Despite our rose-colored hindsight about the lead up to and during World War 2 it was not a united front by any means. A warning from a Republican presidential primary candidate in the 1940 campaign against FDR: “a good deal more danger of the infiltration of totalitarian ideas from the New Deal circle in Washington than there will ever be from any activities of the communists or Nazi bunds.” From a member of congress on mandatory conscription saying it is: “the very essence of Nazism and Hitlerism in the United States.” When the war started there was still rampant rumormongering about Jewish war profiteering and that Black people were gathering weapons for an impending series of race riots. And of course that letting Black people serve in the military meant they were going to ‘steal’ white women. There were also persistent rumors that the Japanese Americans imprisoned in the internment camps were living it up at the public’s expense and living better than the poor oppressed white citizens. Cries of the “the New Deal-Communist axis” rang out. The GOP VP candidate in 1944: “First the New Deal took over the Democratic Party and destroyed its very foundation. Now these Communist forces have taken over the New Deal.” Sound familiar? All of this has happened before… 2
