I admit I laughed at his commentary about the Book of Mormon being “chloroform in print” (the same could be said about the Old Testament, though). And about how it could be “reduced to the size of a pamphlet” if all the “and it can’t to pass”s were left out. I even enjoyed on a certain level his wicked sarcasm when he wrote, in reference to the Testimony of the Eight Witnesses” in the front matter of the Book of Mormon, “I couldn’t have been more convinced if the entire Whitmer family had testified.” I snickered at his account of Brigham Young ignoring him when he and his brother visited Gov. Young in Salt Lake City, until he patted Mark Twain on the head and said, “Ah, your child I presume. Boy or girl?” I nodded knowingly when he said that he gazed at the mountains east of Salt Lake City and could see snow storms on their peak in mid-July. You see, I’ve lived at the base of those mountains most of my life, and, allowing for the obvious hyperbole, he is not far off the mark. 1
