cdowis Posted December 9, 2017 Posted December 9, 2017 (edited) Conversation with Queen Elizabeth in preparation for the Coronation "Is Your Majesty willing to take the oath?" I am willing. "Will you maintain and preserve in invi..." Ah. Inviolably. It means to make a promise you can never break. A very sacred promise indeed. ...... We haven't even reached the anointing. You have to anoint me, otherwise, I can't be King. Do you understand? When the holy oil touches me, I am transformed. Brought into direct contact with the divine. For forever changed. Bound to God. It is the most important part of the entire ceremony. So we had better practice, hadn't we, archbishop? "Be thy hands, anointed, with holy oil. Be thy breast, anointed, with holy oil. Be thy head, anointed, with holy oil." As kings, priests and prophets were anointed. https://www.springfieldspringfield.co.uk/view_episode_scripts.php?tv-show=the-crown-2016&episode=s01e05 from "The Crown" Edited December 10, 2017 by cdowis 4

Americans (including me) watched it on live television in June of 1953 as the Archbishop of Canterbury did that anointing in Westminster Abbey -- but behind a kind of umbrella screen for modesty. The ceremony is over one thousand years old at least, and is actually an initiation rite and investiture, which includes clothing and regalia. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coronation_of_the_British_monarch . As to the regalia, I suggest taking a closer look at the orb. Hagoth and European orbs Edited December 10, 2017 by hagoth7

I didn't mention it, but such sacred relics are part of each royal investiture, as in the case of Mosiah II. The Orbis Terrarum or minutum mundum (pictured here) is symbolic of world dominion. Along with her predecessors, Elizabeth II held both the orb and the sceptre. King Arthur (the once and future king) will have Excalibur, Sangreal,* and shield on his triumphal return, just as Prophet/King Mosiah possesses the Liahona, Sword of Laban, Breastplate, Interpreters, and Holy Book (Brass Plates). * A revelation mysteriously appearing inscribed on the angelically delivered Holy Grail (Sangreal) seems particularly apropos in light of Wolfram von Eschenbach's Grail as a green stone or “super jewel” upon which writing could appear, in his medieval Parzival (H. Mustard & C. Passage, trans., Parzival: A Romance of the Middle Ages [1961], xv,xli-xlv). Hugh Nibley saw it as the "sphere, globe, or 'Reichsapfel' of clear crystal the possession of which was thought to be both the symbol and source of world dominion in the Middle Ages" (Nibley, Message of the Joseph Smith Papyri, 1st ed., 121). In Medieval and Renaissance times baby Jesus was frequently depicted holding the orb and scepter as he sat on his mother’s lap (Dean McKenzie in Bible Review, XVIII/6 [Dec 202], 42). This was also standard procedure in Babylonian times -- Geo Widengren, The Ascension of the Apostle and the Heavenly Book (King and Saviour III) (1950). 3

Also because of its sacred nature, in contrast to the coronation itself. "The anointing is the most sacred part of the coronation ceremony, and takes place before the investiture and crowning. The Archbishop pours holy oil from the Ampulla (or vessel) into the spoon, and anoints the sovereign on the hands, breast and head. The tradition goes back to the Old Testament where the anointing of Solomon by Zadok the Priest and Nathan the Prophet is described. Anointing was one of the medieval holy sacraments and it emphasised the spiritual status of the sovereign. Until the 17th century the sovereign was considered to be appointed directly by God and this was confirmed by the ceremony of anointing."https://www.royalcollection.org.uk/collection/31733/the-coronation-spoon Edited December 10, 2017 by cdowis

The Infant of Prague, baby Jesus, still revered in Catholicism, also holds the orb and wears a crown. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Infant_Jesus_of_Prague He cups the orb in his left hand and raises his right hand in the sign of the cross, separating three fingers representing the Trinity from two fingers symbolizing his dual nature of man and God. cdowis Posted December 17, 2017 Author Posted December 17, 2017 (edited) "There are two elements of the Constitution:" wrote Walter Bagehot in 1867. "The efficient and the dignified." " Which is the monarch, your Royal Highness?" - The dignified? - Very good. The efficient has the power to make and execute policy and is answerable to the electorate. What touches all should be approved by all. The dignified gives significance and legitimacy to the efficient and is answerable only? - To God. - Precisely. Two institutions, Crown and government, dignified and the efficient, only work when they support each other. When they trust one another. You can underline that. https://www.springfieldspringfield.co.uk/view_episode_scripts.php?tv-show=the-crown-2016&episode=s01e07 Edited December 17, 2017 by cdowis
