This is not what the Book of Mormon itself says.  The history of science itself is full of misconceptions, so why do you find  it troubling that science and a more careful reading of the BOM text has given us a better understanding of the BOM.  I believe many of the things that led you away from the church have now come closer to a resolution as we gain more knowledge and understanding.

How  embarrassing.

What exactly is embarrassing, ? "somebody calling history of science embarrassing?" Do I call your beliefs embarrassing?  Get this; We will never gain anymore knowledge & understanding from our faith the way things are set up. What I know did not change one iota from the first day I sat in Sunday School. Since then however I learned (through science) about Human origins, The origin of Universe, everything one wants to know about the Earth, Biology, Health issues...you name it....

I find nothing embarrassing in this scheme.

AS I said,  "so why do you find  it troubling that science and a more careful reading of the BOM text has given us a better understanding of the BOM. "  You ignored my question so let me help you.

I would suffer personal embarrassment and shame if I were to leave the church over what some missionaries said about the Lamanites only to find out that science and a careful reading of the BOM did not support their ideas.  Science and a careful reading of the BOM yielded the "discovery" that the North American Continent had inhabitants other than the Nephites, etc.  I would put a sack over my head that I was so stupid and weak willed to throw away my salvation on my lack of patience to dig out the truth, to figure it out myself, rather than listen to the mistaken ideas of others.

Just as science progresses, our understanding of the history of the BOM progresses.  But, since this involves Deity,  for some this is an incomprehensible concept.  They are willing to throw off God at the least whiff of uncertainty.

Because it has absolutely no substance. It is not a commodity you can use in any shape, except in your imagination. Everything I built, surrounded myself in my life has a tangible, testable effects. My best friends are Mormon, the main reason we stay close friends is we never talk about sensitive issues of faith, we joke about it and reminisce  good days of past but I have no interest of shaking their faith. "Listen to mistaken ideas of others?", that is regretful approach but if you like to maintain your objective looks like it works for you. By no means I am only disappointed in LDS Church, all the faiths are cut from he same cloth, namely the Master says " If you believe me you can move the mountains", well, sorry I can't even move a small sand grain.

I hope it's okay I piggyback this thread, but I am shocked ;) that this stake is having this adult class studying the Gospel Topic Essays in Santa Clara, Utah. How progressive is that?

I wonder if this is a thing, or if there is a select few. Bill Reel shared it on FB, maybe he got the ball rolling. But it would be nice if more stakes followed their lead because this will maybe take care of the members that stumble over the essays.

I have heard reports of several wards who have been studying the Topics on the fifth Sunday for quite sometime, though more the past year.

I don't know about that but  I can vouch that all Indians are from Cro Magnon origin where their forefathers painted Lascaux caves......

Of course if that is true then you admit they somehow made it across the Atlantic.

I have no clue what you are talking about.

Let me enlighten you; Cro Magnon (Homo Sapien)  is the ancestor of all Humanity, they painted in Lascaux  Caves moved to Siberia and later to Americas through Bering Strait.

Of course.  But what you said is that Native Americans painted the murals in French caves. So what's your point?  That Native Americans are humans?  What possible relevance has Lascaux cave paintings to Native Americans then?

This is what you claim that I admit; "Of course if that is true then you admit they somehow made it across the Atlantic."

I don't admit any such thing, there's no evidence of that...They crossed Bering Strait. (Alaska FYI).
