Popular Post The_Monk Posted July 23, 2017 Popular Post Posted July 23, 2017 Hello all. I don't really have much time to post here anymore (nor really to respond to questions.) But I want to plug the conference, because I'm presenting at it and also because I noticed some shade being thrown. FWIW, I believe I am unique in my academic background to approach issues of science and religion and Genesis. My formal studies include a BA in Near Eastern Studies, a MA and PhD work in Semitics at the University of Chicago, all the premedical science classes, and now in a PhD program in (essentially) history of religion. My three PhD exams will be on Reformation history, American religious history, and history of science. This is not to claim all knowledge, of course, and I'm still a student. I feel I have quite a good grasp on the scientific issues, Bible/interpretive issues, and intellectual history. I posted a preview of my presentation here. If you want to get a sense of my writing and approach, here are some examples. I was recently featured on the LDS Perspectives podcast. You can read the presentation text of my Mormon History Association paper here, on the intellectual background of Widtsoe, Talmage, and Roberts' proposals reconciling scripture with science. An article I wrote about the history of Young-earth Creationism for Religion&Politics. My blog Benjamin the Scribe and previous posts at Times&Seasons A popular post about Why Science is (Mostly) Powerless Against YEC. Cheers, and see you at the conference 11
mfbukowski Posted July 24, 2017 Posted July 24, 2017 Ben I love your work- I tried to make it to SMPT for your presentation a few months back, but missed your presentation Could you post a link to it? Thanks Mark 3
juliann Posted July 24, 2017 Posted July 24, 2017 This should be a really good topic and Ben has to be one of the most informed Mormon scholars out there with a very broad knowledge base. Streaming is a good option for those of us out of state. 3

Cheers, and see you at the conference I'll look forward to your presentation, Ben. However, in response to your blurb about what will take place at FAIR, I find it helpful to examine non-Mormon scholars who are covering similar issues. That is another way to get out of the box. 2
HiJolly Posted July 24, 2017 Posted July 24, 2017 I'll be there, Ben. Like Mark, I really respect your work. Thanks for the links! 1
The_Monk Posted July 25, 2017 Author Posted July 25, 2017 My FAIR thing is actually a revision of SMPT, so I'll post it sometime next week. HiJolly, do come say hi. Robert F., I'm reading fairly widely in the field. 1
hope_for_things Posted July 25, 2017 Posted July 25, 2017 Really appreciate your work, your blog and other things. I won't be at FAIR, but look forward to reading about your presentation when its posted later. 2

The_Monk Posted October 19, 2017 Author Posted October 19, 2017 My FAIR presentation is now up for public consumption. https://www.fairmormon.org/conference/august-2017/truth-scripture-and-interpretation FWIW, the only real pushback I've gotten was on Facebook, from a Rod Meldrum follower who tried to argue by citing Evangelical ID proponents and talking about evolution. He seemed incapable of actually addressing my argument. Presuppositions>Interpretation> Broader Implications. He wanted to argue stage 3 of that (broader implications), whereas I had focused entirely on stage 1 (presuppositions).
