Are they the exception to the Mormon rule? When is it honorable to submit willingly to death rather than kill another? How many Mormons relate to the Anti-Nephis-Lehis and refuse to use weapons even to defend themselves?
Calm Posted June 6, 2017 Posted June 6, 2017 (edited) The ANLs made a vow to God to never raise a weapon to kill because they had participated in the past in murder (possibly ritual killing to false gods). Their sons, who never made the vow, are known as the 2000 stripling warriors and were reknown for their faith in battle. Their parents supported the war effort through providing supplies and such helping others to defend them while not breaking their covenant. The greater community supported them in their choice, refusing to allow them to break their covenant when they were troubled by others dying for them. The ANL are a special case therefore. It was the covenant with God that mattered, not a belief that all killing was wrong. I doubt any Mormon relates to the ANL for reasons of pacifism as they weren't pacifists...unless they misunderstand the context. They might relate to them as those who covenant to stand aside from anything that approaches a former sin, even if not a sin in and of itself. Edited June 6, 2017 by Calm 1

If someone had been bloodthirsty and was emotionally scarred from that I wouldn't blame them in the least for not wanting to engage in violence for fear of what it might dredge up.
