Missionaries serving in Russia

Recommended Posts

I received an email today from our Stake Pres office in regard to our missionaries serving in Russia.. they are now to be referred to as "Volunteers"... not missionaries.  Any mail addressed to them should not refer to "Elder" or "Sister."  And the same for them in any reference to them in social media... there was no explanation of what brought this on... my ward has a senior couple (our former bishop and his wife) serving a mission in Siberia for about a year now... I have no further information... and any correspondence will be addressed as "Mr. & Mrs."

It is because the new law in Russia limiting missionary work.  Have you seen the thread in the In The News forum about it?

the sme is true for Turkey. No mention of religious title allowed and everyone is a volunteer. Turkish assignments are now in a different country working with Turkish folk. Because of that awful awful man.

We live in a world where people think they can change something by calling it something else.

Well, they are limiting their missionary work to church meetings only if I understand the law properly, which means they probably get to fill up the rest of their time with service, so volunteers is probably a more accurate word for their time, if not their primary calling.  I will be interested to hear reports on how the Church is adapting to the new law and if numbers sent there will drop.
