Need Quote - Regarding Releasing From Calling Before Magnified

I think it was Bruce R McConkie that said he would never do the disservice of releasing a member from a calling because they have not magnified the calling.  We need to work with the member to increase their performance in the calling so that when they are released they can with a clear conscience.

 

Does anyone have this quote?

No, but I love the idea.  The bishop whom I served as executive secretary operated under a similar concept.

I'm not sure I agree with the thought. A calling has at least two important purposes, one is to help the individual in the calling, but ultimately it is about helping the people being served. There are certain people who accept a calling but do not put any effort into fulfilling it. Such people need to be released if they are unwilling to perform the service.

It's interesting to think about either way. I would add that it's incumbent on those being served by any particular calling to not sit around and wait to be served but to create and show opportunities to be served.  The class members should be interested and ask questions and make suggestions etc.  The home taught should be going to the home teacher to set up an appointment.  The widow should be on the deacons to mow her lawn. Etc.

No, but some callings are to important to the welfare of others to have,someone who is not committed to performing that calling. Sometimes you just have to cut bait or fish. To put it in a very Southren way. I think that would include anyone in the Bishopric (including the clerk) HPGL, EQP, RSP, all young men and women advisors and Primary Presidency. That is on Ward level, I assure you that if a Stake President were not doing his calling or an Area authority, the Church would act quickly...same with Temple President.

There is this man in our stake that got called to the High Council a few weeks ago and he's someone who is around the Church but not in so much. I don't ever recall him having a calling before and i've known him almost my whole life. Apparently some opposed this move and I guess whatever happened but he got re sustained on sunday. My stake clerk bro. told me that the stake pres. anticipate him doing awful or just mediocre and I told him why are you saying these words!!!!!!!! why don't you start him off in calling that's not on the high council where he has to teach people the gospel that i'd be surprised if he knew what that even was as he doesn't come to church hardly at all. if you want to reactivate the guy start him off small and work up from there and not this leap into the HC. I told him too if that's the SP opinion then they deserve everything that they get.

When I was 31, I was called as an assistant to the HPGL, 6 months later I was the HPGL to the largest group in the Stake. I had 40-50 High Priest. The entire time I was the youngest guy in the room. We had a guy we were assigned to home teach. He hardly ever attended, one night we visited him and asked him what we could do to get him back in Church. He noted that he was older than myself and some others and that making him a High Priest would do it. Myself and the Stake President who was with me explained that callings are not issue because of age. But slowly he started coming back, maybe once a month. One Sunday soon after (he was there) I was called into the Bishopric, I stood up to be sustained, and he stood up and walked out...the entire time I was in the Bishopric he never showed and for some time after. When the Bishop was released, I was released at the same time and called on the same Sunday to teach gospel doctrine. Then one day he showed up, so I often called on him to make him feel a part of what was going on...the new Bishop called upon him a number of times to give the opening prayer...his,prayers were talks he felt he should have he the opportunity to give...they were endless. So the Bishop stopped calling upon him. Then he barely ever showed again. "Many are called, but few are chosen". To this day, he feels slighted...some want the title but many don't want the work or commitment. As we used to say at work, many want the paycheck but no one wants the job. Sadly he is a smart guy, who could offer much.
